Will I love Star of the Sea?

I love this story because, for me, it’s a perfect example of why a ship is such a great platform for storytelling, a moving stage for a compelling cast of characters to act out the drama of their past and present lives while heading into an uncertain future.

This novel gave me such great insight into the immigrant experience of the Irish in the mid-nineteenth century.

The reality of the voyage over for the poor clashes sharply with the reality for the wealthy. The plot involves a mystery, a love story, and a mysterious person seeking revenge, all of which kept me up late at night reading. 

Even professional historians need to slow down and read fiction sometimes! And Joseph O’Connor’s Star of the Sea his is one of my all-time favorites. Set on an emigrant sailing ship during Ireland’s Great Famine, this dark thriller skillfully interweaves the stories of a number of different passengers, one of whom happens to be a murderer. O’Connor, one of Ireland’s leading novelists, finds that perfect balance between “historical” and “fiction.”
