He goes to the hospital to find her and, instead, finds himself in a seemingly endless complex. As he tracks his wife, he encounters bizarre characters, freakish sexual experiments, and more.
Although the novel is more than a little dark, I was fascinated by the imaginativeness of the setting and situation and the underlying logic.
