Why read it?

4 authors picked Safe Haven as one of their favorite books. Why do they recommend it?

Nicholas Sparks is one of those romance writers whose work I mostly like, but I’m not a die-hard fan. However, I love this book. Not every sweet, sappy romance makes me cry, but this one did. I really cared for the main character, Katie. She’s quiet and keeps to herself, but beneath the reserved smile, she’s hiding from an abusive marriage.

It takes courage to run from a bad situation and strength to face your demons finally. I also liked that the romance was believable and took its time. Romances that make me fall in love with the characters are…

I had just gotten out of an emotionally abusive and controlling nine-year relationship when a friend suggested I start reading Nicholas Sparks. Of course I had heard of him, this was right around the height of The Notebook.

Safe Haven was the third Nicholas Sparks book I picked up and absolutely loved. I connected with the characters, especially the main character Katie! This book gave me hope for the future and finding someone who would love me the way that Alex loves her!

Like many readers, I love a good Nicholas Sparks book, and this one happens to be my favorite. Safe Haven beautifully captures the horrible effects of an abusive relationship and inspires carving a way out for the abused.

It’s dreadful and amazing, emotional and encouraging, all at the same time. I think this book sheds light on a terrible truth that many people experience and allows readers time to process and empathize with others who may experience abuse of any sort.

The genius of this book is that it starts out as a typical Nicholas Sparks novel (nothing wrong with that) before morphing into a full-on thriller. The change is subtle, building up the intrigue and tension until the novel’s small-town sappiness (again, nothing wrong with that) makes way for some interesting reveals and a truly memorable villain.

The side characters are well-rounded without being aggressively quirky, and I always rooted for the heroine even when I, like all the other characters, didn’t know her full story. I thought the first third was a bit slow at times, but I’m so…
