This is the first book in Saylor’s “Roma sub rosa” series, and introduces one of the nicest heroes in historical mystery! Gordianus the Finder is the Roman equivalent of our private detective and he works for a young politician and orator, Cicero. Based on a real lawsuit from 80 BCE, Saylor makes great use of the actual speech made, and conveys the skill and showmanship of the lawyer at a time when a good speech was seen as entertainment for the masses. Into this original material though he weaves a hideous and complex murder plot. Riveting stuff!

My other great hobby is “murder mysteries.” Steven Saylor’s mystery novels utilize real people and events in Ancient Rome, in this case, the famous advocate Cicero. Roman Blood highlights the first famous case of Cicero, defending a man accused of patricide, the worst crime in Roman culture (he won). Readers will recognize the beginnings of “forensic science,” as he and his secretary Tiro follow the clues in formulating the defense. Again, one can learn so much about Roman religion and society in this format.

In addition to historical novels, I’ve always enjoyed a good crime/legal thriller. In Steve Saylor’s Sub Rosa series, you get the best of both worlds. From book 1, Roman Blood, through the remainder of the series, you’ll be on the edge of your seat. Gordianus the Finder is a compelling protagonist with a plethora of nuances that will keep you flipping pages. Steven Saylor gives us an incredibly vivid glimpse into the daily lives of the ancient Romans, from the lowest, forgotten members of society to the most opulent and powerful politicians.
