Will I love Out of Sight?

Elmore Leonard was the first crime author I ever read, and his books are what got me hooked on the genre.

Like many of his characters, Jack Foley, despite being a criminal, in this case a bank robber, is just so much fun to spend time with and read about.

The book starts with Foley escaping from prison only to find himself bundled into the trunk of a car with a female US marshal. What follows is a cat-and-mouse, cops and robbers tale, as only Elmore Leonard could have written it.

Leonard’s the essential master of comedy-crime, full stop, so facile with the blend that he makes it look like he isn’t even trying. Here he conjures a charmingly impossible romance between gentleman bank robber Jack Foley and U.S. Marshal Karen Cisco, borne of an unplanned rideshare in a car trunk during a prison break gone sideways. Is this Leonard’s greatest novel, or does it just seem that way because it yielded far the best of his many adaptations? (Appropriate, by the way, for a book with the movies on its mind.)
