Why read it?

8 authors picked Naked in Death as one of their favorite books. Why do they recommend it?

Though last on this list, Roarke is by no means “last” in anything. Powerful, confident, insanely wealthy, and oh-so-sexy, Roarke is the epitome of the swoon-worthy alpha male.

Seeing his love for his lieutenant, Eve, I fell in love—and fell hard. I was hooked after book one, and 60 books later, I still can’t get enough.

I've wanted to read this series for a long time and I finally got started on it. And I was hooked from Book 1.

I loved this book because it is the first in my favorite series by J.D. Robb (Nora Roberts).

This series includes clever and captivating murder mysteries that take place in the near future (2058). The two main characters are Lieutenant Eve Dallas of the NYPSD Homicide Division and her billionaire husband, Roarke.

They are two entirely different personalities with one common thread, a history of childhood abuse. They meet, fall in love, and form an unbreakable bond that transcends their many differences and gives them the combined strength to go up against even the most vicious of killers.

If you’re looking to binge a great murder mystery series with futuristic elements, JD Robb’s In Death series should be on your list. This is an auto-buy for me.

I fell in love with Eve Dallas, a New York City Lieutenant from page one. I love the creative mix of future elements (it’s set in 2058) and the in-depth character development of film noire stereotype of a cop on the edge of burnout.

As a homicide cop with a decade of experience, she’s no stranger to unraveling a killer’s motive, means, and opportunity, but when an investigation brings her into…

It’s the year 2058, and Eve Dallas is a New York City detective. She tries to follow the rules, but she’s not averse to bending them if she thinks it will help a case.

Oh, and she manages to fall for the main suspect in a murder investigation. Roarke is the classic alpha hero, a smoking-hot billionaire who dragged himself out of the gutter to become one of the most wealthy and influential men on (and off) the planet. The good news? If you enjoy this book, there are another fifty in the series.

From Elise's list on morally grey heroines.

I believe the entire In Death series represents the best of the crime fiction/mystery genre. Frankly, Naked In Death is one of the reasons I began writing crime fiction. J.D. Robb gripped me from the start through one of the most interesting and complex characters I have encountered—Lieutenant Eve Dallas.

I was compelled to follow Eve’s journey as a troubled adult with a horrible past who becomes New York’s top cop, struggling to fit into society and the new life she’s thrown into when she meets Roarke. The whodunit was excellent, full of plot twists staged by…

Book cover of The Guardian of the Palace

The Guardian of the Palace by Steven J. Morris,

The Guardian of the Palace is the first novel in a modern fantasy series set in a New York City where magic is real—but hidden, suppressed, and dangerous when exposed.

When an ancient magic begins to leak into the world, a small group of unlikely allies is forced to act…

In this, the first of fifty-six books in the series, we’re introduced to a New York City detective, Eve Dallas, in the year 2058. Eve lives for her job – until she meets Roarke, a suspect in her murder investigation. Each book takes place in about a month’s time, so we get to watch the relationships develop from book to book – and we get to see the evolution of Eve—and Roarke—in each subsequent story.

The mysteries are intricate and well-written, the side characters are as captivating as the main ones, and each ends with a satisfying finish.

I spent…

This is the first of fifty-six books in Robb’s In Death series with Lieutenant Eve Dallas as the lead. Dallas’s partner Detective Delia Peabody doesn’t appear until the second book, but I recommend starting with this one. For me, this book/series was a lesson in the evolving friendship/working relationship of two women detectives where one of them has more experience than the other as with Corelli and Parker.

It's also a lesson in keeping a series alive and fresh over so many books.

From Catherine's list on mysteries that feature two detectives.
