Book cover of Laura Dean Keeps Breaking Up with Me

Book description

Laura Dean, the most popular girl in high school, was Frederica Riley's dream girl: charming, confident, and SO cute. There's just one problem: Laura Dean is maybe not the greatest girlfriend.

Reeling from her latest break up, Freddy's best friend, Doodle, introduces her to the Seek-Her, a mysterious medium who…

Why read it?

4 authors picked Laura Dean Keeps Breaking Up with Me as one of their favorite books. Why do they recommend it?

This one has messy right in the title! Freddy keeps getting dumped by Laura Dean over and over. She gets so blinded by her “love” for Laura Dean that she takes her friends for granted. It’s a classic story with an LGBT+ twist. Part of what makes it stand out is the beautiful visual storytelling. I actually learned a lot from this one, as it’s quite different from the superhero comics I grew up with. There are moments in here where two hands will say a thousand words.

Let me start by saying…this book is gorgeous. Each page is so beautifully illustratedI would genuinely recommend this book for the art alone.

The story, however, is just as much of a treat. I love this book because it features a wide variety of lesbian characters and tackles an important topic: representation of toxic relationships and the struggle to break out of them! I’ve certainly been there myself, and it made this story very relatable and meaningful for me.

From Ellie's list on books for people who love women.

Laura Dean is a nightmare girlfriend, and much to the chagrin of her friends, Freddie just cannot seem to get over her!

I love this book about boundaries, messy relationships, friendship, and personal growth.

Rosemary Valero-O’Connell’s art is stunning in this one, both wonderfully expensive and playfully maximalist, from the way she draws the details of characters’ outfits and bedrooms, and especially her love of rendering plants. It makes the book feel wonderfully alive.

Mariko Tamaki’s storytelling is thoughtful, funny, and unapologetically queer. I’ve been a fan of hers since first encountering one of her graphic novellas.

Magical realism meets the magic of Christmas in this mix of Jewish, New Testament, and Santa stories–all reenacted in an urban psychiatric hospital!

It’s a bestseller and hardly needs my rec, but I need to tell you right now to check out every book Mariko Tamaki has written, from her Harley Quinn and She-Hulk comics to Cold, Skim, Roaming and This One Summer (the latter three are collaborations with her astonishingly talented illustrator cousin Jillian Tamaki).

Laura Dean is a beautiful, self-absorbed gay girl who is a terrible texter and likes thinking about her own passing desires far more than Frederica’s hobbies, friends, or dreams, though she’s happy to make out with and snuggle her between spontaneous text-based breakups.

Valero O’Connell’s dreamy art,…
