Eventually, the vampires of Rice’s subsequent books become much-beloved gothic heartthrobs, but not this time. This novel serves up vampires the way I like them—mean, vicious, without remorse or conscience. Rice’s use of the newly turned Louis to let the reader see the struggle between humanity and the liberty of being a soulless vampire is pure genius to me.
