Book cover of I'm with the Band: Confessions of a Groupie

Book description

Pamela Des Barres was a regular on the Sunset Strip, where she knocked on rock stars' backstage doors and immersed herself in the drugs, danger, and ecstasy of the freewheeling 1960s. Over the next 10 years she had affairs with Mick Jagger, Jimmy Page, Keith Moon and Jim Morrison, among…

Why read it?

4 authors picked I'm with the Band as one of their favorite books. Why do they recommend it?

Pamela Des Barre's incredible history as rock and roll’s number one famous groupie helped her create her incredible memoir! Her extremely well-written book features many super cool personal stories about her involvement with several famous musicians/rockstars that nearly all of us women who are rock fans would have loved to have been in close, loving contact with ourselves!

Pamela was definitely my biggest inspiration when it came to memoir writing. She digs my book as well, writing a complimentary comment that appears on its back cover!

From Laurie's list on rock and roll cool talented creators.

If there will be any discussion on what it’s like to hang out with rock stars of the 60s and 70s, Pamela Des Barre is in it. She was smack-dab in the middle of the scene, helping to create the scene in the first place, and this book tells all the stories of how she got to meet, become friends, and hang out with the greats–from Led Zeppelin to burgeoning Don Johnson and beyond.

She was in the rooms where the greats not only performed but also offered a fascinating look into the time period and what it was like…

From Heather's list on 60s 70s rock and roll stories.

To see the seedy underbelly, the proud head, and well… the entire body of the rock industry through the eyes of its key muse and groupie is quite a wild read! What did Mick Jagger, Jimmy Page, Jim Morrison, Robert Plant, Keith Moon, and so many more rockstars have in common? Who were the GTOs and The Plaster Castors? What’s it like to be Moon Unit Zappa’s nannie? You can’t pretend you don’t want to read this. There were many intelligent and fascinating thoughts throughout. It let me see things through a new lens.

From Tobias' list on for rock guitar philosophers.

New York Times bestseller, I'm With The Band hit bookshelves in 1987. It has been translated and reprinted all over the world. This memoir is a remarkably stylish, exuberant, and sweetly innocent tale of the most famous groupie of the 60s and 70s. You might want to dismiss this book as a salacious, sensationalized tell-all, but that would be because you haven't read it. It's widely understood that Miss Pamela was the inspiration for Penny Lane, the groupie character in Cameron Crowe's Almost Famous movie. It's also been reported that Kate Hudson, who acted the role, kept Des Barres's pictures…
