Why read it?

4 authors picked Hyperbole and a Half as one of their favorite books. Why do they recommend it?

I passively disliked gerkhins until I met this pink, clueless one who’s writing and drawing a book on mental challenges, among other things.

Yes, there are drawings and multicolored pages in an autobiographical book about depression so deep that it keeps the author in bed. Gaspingly funny and told with searing honesty, the book is about dogs, a partner, and a house that needs caring for–caring that she isn’t in the mood to do–and a to-do list that stays undone while she whiles away her time doing nothing.

This book makes me snort-laugh every time I read it.

The ridiculous, rudimentary illustrations perfectly capture the absurdity and weirdness of life, and the writing—about everything from dogs to depression—is smart, witty, and accurate. This book is a little crazy and since I often think I’m a little crazy, it’s perfect for me.

The book’s small slices of life (and cake, with which the author is obsessed) are the perfect antidote for any day that I feel the world has gone mad. So pretty much every day.

From Julie's list on to feel less alone in the world.

I don’t remember who recommended this book or how it made its way onto my reading list, but I checked it out from the library on my Kindle and fell in love with it immediately.

It’s the first graphic memoir I’ve ever read. I never thought a memoir with pictures would be my thing. But, this book is creative, brilliant, and downright hilarious. Brosh shares wonderful stories from her childhood – always self-effacing and endearing. And her more recent stories are engaging and funny – like the time a wild goose got into her house and attacked her boyfriend.

I…

Hyperbole and a Half is like a honey-roasted almond – salty and sweet at the same time. Author Allie Brosh offers snippets of her life growing up, some which are mundane, and others which recount her struggle with depression – and all which are told with brutal honesty, sharp wit, and amazing humor. The illustrated comic-like book explains what it feels like to be human which, let’s face it, isn’t always great. What is great is the absolute hilarity with which Brosh describes ordinary events, such as a letter she wrote to her future self and her love of dogs…

From Theresa's list on that make me LOL.
