Will I love How to Stop Time?

Matt Haig is one of those rare writers whose every book is great. And this is no exception. It’s the story of Tom Hazard, a nondescript English teacher–except he’s actually 400 years old and has lived many lives. I’ve always been fascinated by the idea of what I would do if I could live my life over. Mind you, it’s not all fun.

I love the originality of this story, and found the concept of somebody living that long and across multiple centuries to be a fascinating idea.

Who wants to live forever? Or, as in this contemporary novel, for 500 years or more? In his unique style and wit, Matt Haig explores the many pitfalls and heartaches that living an extra-long life poses along with some of the positives his central character Tom must endure. A lot of people are familiar with Matt Haig’s The Midnight Library, but this book is my favourite of his. It’s the story of a man who suffers from a genetic disorder that causes him to age very slowly, meaning everyone he loves eventually dies while he remains almost the same age throughout their relationship. It explores themes of family, loneliness, and depression, and―what resonated with me most―finding inner peace in the beauty that life has to offer.
