Will I love Four Seasons in Rome?

This was the first Anthony Doerr book I read—the literary equivalent of eating dessert first. I’ve since savored his novels, but this irresistible feast of delicious morsels of Italian life lingers in my mind. Doerr doesn’t show you Rome. He invites you to live in it with him—during his sleepless nights, in the company of his twin babies, as a beloved Pope lies dying and the seasons bring new enchantments.

I loved this book for its gorgeous writing, particularly the descriptions of paintings and buildings in Rome. I was so moved by Doerr’s evocative words that I was compelled to find online images of these subjects as I read.

Not only does he write with beautiful precision, but he also conveys his experiences with honesty and humility, noting the linguistic and physical challenges he encountered as a writer trying to justify a fellowship while raising two infants in an ancient city.

Life in Roma! This memoir is a gem and quite funny. Doerr’s prose is razor sharp and he cleverly shares his adventures of a year in Rome as a new parent of twins. Having just visited the Pantheon, I particularly enjoyed Doer’s description of this temple built by the emperor Hadrian in AD 125.
