Why read it?

3 authors picked Dreadnought as one of their favorite books. Why do they recommend it?

Dreadnought is a fantastic story about a young trans girl who inherits the powers of the most powerful superhero in the world.

Like Captain Marvel, it bestows upon her the looks of her idealized form. Unfortunately, this goes over like a ton of bricks with her family that she hadn't revealed herself to. The coming-of-age drama doesn't take a back seat to the superheroics, though, and I absolutely love the characters created by the author.

From C.T.'s list on superheroes not from Marvel or DC.

Dreadnought is a fantastic superhero origin story with some of the best superhero fight scenes I’ve ever read. It’s also a coming-out story, with the main character coming out both as a trans woman and a lesbian during the course of the story.

Danny, a closeted teenage trans girl, inherits the powers of the world’s strongest superhero. Powers that come with her ideal body, and she has to deal with her bigoted parents’ horror at her transformation and a superhero community that’s less than welcoming all while trying to stop the villain who killed the man she inherited her powers…

From Molly's list on sapphic superhero.

I agreed to do this list because I wanted to promote April’s book so much. Seriously. If I could recommend it in every slot I would. Trans superhero dealing with her rage and powers in an alternative USA where superheroes are real? Yes, please. The writing is like so good that sometimes I type chapters of this book as a warm-up (and writing procrastination technique). I re-read it as a treat to myself as a way of surviving the pandemic.
