It is a pivotal book, and I have used it for nearly everything I’ve written. It is very well thought out, researched, translated, and contains a lot of material that other early researchers of Egyptian spirituality overlooked. When I was downsizing my library, I found I had two copies of this book and I kept them both. One I had heavily underlined, and the other pristine version I kept as clean as possible.

Ancient Egyptian religion is so much more than royal pyramid burials and animal-headed gods, and Hornung’s book explains how. He dissects the notoriously complex topic by first defining terms, like the word netjer, “god,” and then explores creation accounts, divine imagery, and how humans and gods interact. Along the way, Hornung pulls in a story by Edgar Allen Poe, the motto of the French Revolution, and even black holes. Any study of ancient Egyptian religion should begin with this erudite, witty, and accessible book.
