A memoir about a young girl's life on the Colorado plains in the 1910s. A sublime piece of writing that is hard to praise too much. The details and the characters are vivid. I want to read everything this woman wrote now.

The book predates the Dust Bowl, but there are warning signs of what’s to come. Told in a voice of lyric precision with a memorable cast of characters, it’s a compelling story of a singular girlhood that left me marveling at how this family survived.
