Book description
Decades after it spent weeks at #1 on the New York Times bestseller list, A Season on the Brink remains the most celebrated basketball book ever written—an unforgettable chronicle of his year spent following the Indiana Hoosiers and their fiery coach Bob Knight.
Granted unprecedented access to legendary coach Bob…
Why read it?
2 authors picked A Season on the Brink as one of their favorite books. Why do they recommend it?
This book defined a genre: Immersive, full-access, diary-like storytelling with a bold-faced name. Bobby Knight, the Indiana University basketball coach, was a hot-tempered genius. And Feinstein caught all the moments that illuminated Knight’s brilliance, madness, and humanity, from irate practice rants to lonely nights obsessing over losses.
In keeping with the theme of my list, I love this book because it revealed a niche mania—in this case, the passion of Indiana hoops fans—to a broader audience and took it mainstream. It was addictive reading.

This book is what happens when you give an incredible writer incredible access to an incredible subject.
The late Bob Knight allowed John Feinstein to essentially join his team, the Indiana Hoosiers, for the 1985-86 season, and the result is a deeply compelling and extremely engaging profile of the legendary coach, whose style was… unorthodox, to say the least.
I could not recommend it more.
