The classic and superbly poetic manifesto about the writer’s need for a private space!

I have loved this book ever since I first read it in college. Woolf’s often-quoted adage “One cannot think well, love well, sleep well, if one has not dined well” has informed my own writerly belief that any book needs its own time, place, and treat to lure the author to it day after day after day.

A dear friend gave me this book when I started writing – it’s precious to me because he knew it would encourage me to find my voice.

It is the ultimate companion text for a female writer. I have been inspired by Virginia Woolf’s work to become a writer myself, to find a room of my own. Spanning decades, Woolf sent the message that a woman will battle the externally imposed silence on her imagination and her choices, and, with her own physical and metaphorical room, she can create literary greatness.

I came late to this book, only having read it recently because one of my kids needed help researching for an IB school project.

It blew my mind. Woolf gave words to so many of the feelings that I had shoved down deep about being a woman and an artist.
