Why read it?

2 authors picked A Clean Kill in Tokyo as one of their favorite books. Why do they recommend it?

This is one of the best books in Eisler’s John Rain series, featuring half-American, half-Japanese assassin and Vietnam veteran John Rain.

Eisler himself was a covert operative with the CIA’s Directorate of Operations, and his descriptions of fieldcraft, surveillance, torture, and killing techniques all ring so true, as does his extensive knowledge of modern Japan.

Tokyo is, of course, a fascinating playground for Rain’s adventures. Eisler’s books and unputdownable, and well worth discovering.

From Philippe's list on thrillers set in Asia.

Barry Eisler is a prolific and highly successful writer, but for my money his first book is his best. John Rain is a half-Japanese, half-American killer for hire who was trained in the Vietnam war. He is deeply conflicted about his work, which sometimes requires him to cause harm to people close to him. At the same time, he is totally professional. Eisler lived in Tokyo in the 1990s, and he captures the atmosphere of the giant city superbly. Whenever I go to the Body & Soul jazz club, I’m reminded of Rain’s tortured romance with the pianist there.
