Why read it?

4 authors picked 13 Reasons Why as one of their favorite books. Why do they recommend it?

The story of Clay Jensen is both beautiful and repelling in that it forced me to consider the unseen impact my insecurities and actions may have had on others when I was a teen. I couldn’t imagine being a shy, bright, and likable California high school student unexpectedly thrust into the center of a girl’s suicide by being named one of the contributors to her death. But that’s the point. Neither can Clay.

In his case, the only way to discover why he was included is to listen to a set of thirteen tapes made by the victim. These tapes…

From Richard's list on bad boys we love or love to hate.

This book has had many mixed reviews, but in my opinion, it is an excellent story for adults of teens and mature teens to read.

Hannah, a teenage girl, commits suicide. She leaves her classmate a package with a cassette tape in it, explaining the 13 reasons why she decided to end her life. This novel demonstrates the cruelties of teen life, from rumors, to reputations, to rape. It shows the reader: “in the end, everything matters.”

Hopefully, people who read this book will better understand how much their actions affect one another, and they’ll think twice before causing even…

Asher’s book takes on heavy themes of suicide, bullying, and mental health in such a magnetic way that the book is impossible to put down, impossible to forget. After Hannah Baker’s death, her friends are left with a series of tapes detailing the role each played in her decision to end her life. Yes, it’s heavy, but I like it for its examining of suicide and toxic friendships on a deeper level with questions about agency and blame. The TV series was equally stunning.

I’d heard about the emotional impact of this book, but wasn’t prepared for the theme of teen suicide to be so absorbing. I read the whole thing in shock and suspense and a whole lot of hope – hope that when I got to the end the main character wouldn’t have done the unthinkable. There are so many different emotions in this novel that any reader will be able to connect one way or another. We’ve all been teens facing bullying, rejection, first love, misunderstandings, and all that other “stuff” that tears you apart or makes you stronger.

From Debra's list on about emotions and suspense.
