Why am I passionate about this?

Erotic literature has always fascinated me as a great transgressor of social conventions. I read the Marquis de Sade when I was young, followed by Henry Miller and the extraordinary Venus in Furs. These are works of astonishing literary scope that explore human nature as few others do. Then I discovered Bataille, and the fascination became too profound to ignore for a restless writer determined to explore human nature. When I read Lolita, I understood that eroticism wasn't merely a perfect thread for a narrative, but could become the very essence of great literary storytelling. For me, continuing that exploration through dark romance is simply a natural extension of who I am as a writer.

Why I love this book

This book made a strong impression on me when I read it some time ago.

Its eroticism was far more explicit than almost anything I had encountered before. Few novels described desire, and especially sexual scenes, in such a direct and detailed way while still maintaining the tension between the protagonists. It was a pleasant surprise to discover just how completely a novel could revolve around desire as the true driving force of the narrative.

It inspired me because it broke down any internal censorship I might have had as a writer, and I immediately knew that I could write a novel in which eroticism and sensuality were themselves the absolute protagonists.

Why I love this book

I liked Ana Huang’s Twisted Love because it achieves something essential: desire, anticipation, and uncertainty become milestones in the narrative, keeping the reader in suspense, never quite knowing when the characters will finally give in.

Alex was an inspiring character for me: cold, controlling, and, above all, emotionally inaccessible. The tension with Ava works equally well because they are so emotionally different that Huang turns their relationship into an explosive combination.

Add secrets and danger to all of this, and you have a great novel.

Why I love this book

Turning the villain into the protagonist is a literary art.

I like exploring different facets of a protagonist that can surprise readers and keep them on edge. Emily McIntire does this extremely well in Hooked: James is dark, manipulative, and dangerous—a genuine inspiration to me. The wicked idea of starting with a children’s tale to tell this story shows unusual literary ambition.

The relationship between James and Wendy constantly plays with desire, revenge, and power, and reveals something interesting to an author like me: a protagonist does not need to be good to be fascinating. He needs to be complex, unpredictable, and capable of awakening conflicting emotions.

Why I love this book

This was a revealing read for me.

I understand its enormous success and admire H. D. Carlton’s ability to take obsession, danger, and attraction into territory few novels dare to explore. I also found it fascinating because it showed me how far dark romance could be taken and, above all, how far millions of readers were willing to follow it.

As a writer, it influenced me as a model, but also by contrast, because I believe that obsession and desire, to feel genuine and authentic, must be accompanied by psychology and character development that make the attraction believable.

Secret societies are always a powerful ingredient in any story, and this one inspired me, so I found it particularly interesting.
