Book cover of Agnes Aubert's Mystical Cat Shelter

Mary-Jean Harris ❤️ loved this book because...

Agnes Aubert’s Mystical Cat Shelter was such an enjoyable read, perfect for fantasy fans and cat lovers! I wouldn’t categorize it as a “cozy” fantasy due to the high stakes and the deaths of some side characters, but it does have the feel of a cozy fantasy with the cat shelter and warm baked goods in a cold Canadian winter. Being a Canadian myself, I was intrigued to see the story set in historic Montreal in the 1920s, especially as I have visited the city a few times.

Book cover of Miss Drugget Takes the Train

Mary-Jean Harris ❤️ loved this book because...

I adored this story, and found Columbine to be such a captivating character! Although it was written in the 1940s, Columbine was quite modern in her thinking. Of course, there were many dated expressions and descriptions (describing female characters, for instance) but it didn't hinder the story. Columbine's adventure from an assistant school mistress to the owner and manager of a hotel and the foibles and challenges she faced drew me in from start to finish.

Mask of the Raven

By Mary-Jean Harris ,

Book cover of Mask of the Raven

What is my book about?

Daughter of the head of a secret society in 1860s Germany, Inge Kron embarks on a mission to find a rare manuscript by the English mystic Dr. John Dee. She finds herself at the court of Hannover, having to muster skills of deception and flattery just as much as book learning. But she is being watched. When she meets the younger princess of Hannover who has been studying Dee’s work, she finds that the book has a strange effect on those who read it. The Prussian army is closing in on Hannover, and with the eyes of another secret society also set on the manuscript, there is little time to obtain the book. But the question remains: what strange magic is hidden within its pages?
