I have loved fantasy and history since I was a child, and a blend of the two creates a new sort of magic! In addition to reading historical fantasy, I’ve been passionate about writing in the genre and bringing new “what if?” questions to life with historical settings and mysticism and magic in my writing, some of which are inspired by ancient traditions around the world. Fantasy can be more than imaginative creation, but a delve into the mysterious side of history as well, and I find that books that delve into this aspect of fantasy really capture my interest when they’re done well.
At 782 pages, including numerous footnotes, it might seem a daunting task for a reader, but I would have easily enjoyed a novel twice its length. The style of writing is beautifully detailed and has a wry British humour that is a pleasure to read.
The magic is seamlessly woven into the land and culture of England. We learn about the history of the Napoleonic Wars with a bit of a fantastical spin, showing how magic was used in the war and the consequences of its presence in history.
An alternative history that truly captures one’s imagination and sense of “what if?” Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell is one that I’ll definitely read again and again.
Two magicians shall appear in England. The first shall fear me; the second shall long to behold me The year is 1806. England is beleaguered by the long war with Napoleon, and centuries have passed since practical magicians faded into the nation's past. But scholars of this glorious history discover that one remains: the reclusive Mr Norrell whose displays of magic send a thrill through the country. Proceeding to London, he raises a beautiful woman from the dead and summons an army of ghostly ships to terrify the French. Yet the cautious, fussy Norrell is challenged by the emergence of…
This was a fun, quirky story with a captivating point-of-view character.
The story seamlessly wove together the magic of djinnis into a historical setting. The magic was interesting, though very simple: all magic came from djinnis, and magicians (humans) only had magic by controlling the djinnis.
Yet the story itself was hardly simple, and the society of djinnis and magicians was creative and brought history to life in a whole new way. One of the point-of-view characters is a djinni, Bartimaeus, and I loved his humorous narration the most.
The novel is the first in a series, and I’ve of course read the other books and would recommend them all!
The first volume in the brilliant, bestselling Bartimaeus sequence.
When the 5,000-year-old djinni Bartimaeus is summoned by Nathaniel, a young magician's apprentice, he expects to have to do nothing more taxing than a little levitation or a few simple illusions. But Nathaniel is a precocious talent and has something rather more dangerous in mind: revenge. Against his will, Bartimaeus is packed off to steal the powerful Amulet of Samarkand from Simon Lovelace, a master magician of unrivalled ruthlessness and ambition. Before long, both djinni and apprentice are caught up in a terrifying flood of magical intrigue, murder and rebellion.
Wolf Magick is a contemporary Gothic dark-fantasy tale of wild darkness and haunted love.
Marc Sexton, charismatic and bold, refuses to accept his supernatural destiny—his spiritual calling of wolf magick. This man harbors olde secrets: he denies the shapeshifting “gift” he inherited from his father, a powerful Celtic realm walker…
A dive into Victorian England with magical creatures, I loved following Emily’s adventures as she comes up against the fey and learns about their secret society.
There are historical figures in the novel as well, and it was fascinating to see an alternative version of London’s history unfold. Although it is a middle-grade book, it is definitely a series that young adults and adults would enjoy too.
Rise of the Darklings
By
Paul Crilley,
What is this book about?
Some things, once glimpsed, can never be unseen. . . .
It was a morning like any other, frigid and gray, when Emily Snow took to the streets of Victorian London to earn the pennies that would keep her and her little brother alive for another day. But a chance turning took her through a dark alley, and there Emily witnessed an extraordinary battle between fierce, tiny creatures no taller than her knee.
Now Emily’s life will never be the same, for she can see the world of Faerie. And once seen, she cannot turn away; once engaged, she must…
This is a wonderful trilogy, with an ending that really pays off.
I loved the main trio: Tessa, Jem, and Will, and the book draws you into the world of the Shadowhunters that lies just beneath our own. It is easy to become emotionally invested in this book, so be warned!
The classical Victorian setting is a perfect backdrop for magic and the covert societies that the characters navigate during their adventures.
First in Cassandra Clare's internationally bestselling Infernal Devices trilogy about the Shadowhunters.

This was such a magical story: I simply had to include it even though it isn’t a historical fantasy that takes place in the world we know.
The world of Lirael is rich and feels real, with characters that breathe off the pages and magic hidden in the corners of the world. The way that the author brings the world to life made it feel as though I was learning about the real history of the world.
Lirael is such an amazing character to follow as well, and I loved her journey of discovery as she comes up against dangers and discovers who she really is.
Sequel to the spellbinding, award-winning fantasy adventure, SABRIEL. Lirael has never felt like a true daughter of the Clayr. Abandoned by her mother and ignorant of her father's identity, Lirael resembles no one else in her large, extended family living in the Clayr's Glacier. She doesn't even have the Sight - the ability to See into the present and possible futures - that is the very birthright of the Clayr. Nonetheless, it is Lirael in whose hands the fate of the Old Kingdom lies. She must undertake a desperate mission under the growing shadow of an ancient evil - one…
Daughter of the head of a secret society in 1860s Germany, Inge Kron embarks on a mission to find a rare manuscript by the English mystic Dr. John Dee. She finds herself at the court of Hannover, having to muster skills of deception and flattery just as much as book learning. But she is being watched.
When she meets the younger princess of Hannover who has been studying Dee’s work, she finds that the book has a strange effect on those who read it. The Prussian army is closing in on Hannover, and with the eyes of another secret society also set on the manuscript, there is little time to obtain the book. But the question remains: what strange magic is hidden within its pages?
The Shadow of the Eagle is a fresh take on epic fantasy that has all the trademarks of a Paula Weston novel: fast-paced action, immersive world-building, nuanced characters, and a slow-burn romance. It’s about the nature of loyalty, love, faith, and friendship.

Rhoswen is training as a Realm Rider to work with dragons and burn away the Narxon swarming into her realm. Rhoswen’s dream is to…
