Book cover of The Space Between Worlds

Mark A. Rayner 👍 liked this book because...

This was one of the greatest setups I've read of a multiverse book in a while -- the main character is able to travel between universes because she is part of her society's underclass. And this, ironically, gives her value. This is good science fiction with great social commentary baked into the premise!

The writing is good and the pacing is excellent. Recommended!

What is this book about?

The Sunday Times bestseller. Winner of the Kitschies Golden Tentacle award.

A stunning science fiction debut, The Space Between Worlds is both a cross-dimensional adventure and a powerful examination of identity, privilege, and belonging.

'My mother used to say I was born reaching, which is true. She also used to say it would get me killed, which it hasn't. Not yet, anyway.'

Born in the dirt of the wasteland, Cara has fought her entire life just to survive. Now she has done the impossible, and landed herself a comfortable life on the lower levels of the wealthy and walled-off Wiley…

Book cover of The Blacktongue Thief

Mark A. Rayner ❤️ loved this book because...

This is just an amazing book. The world-building is completely seamless. Pieces of the puzzle just drop in to place while the narrator, who is an engaging and amusing rogue, gives us a great sense of the place. No info dumps. No narrative bloat. Amazing writing that is truly laugh-out-loud funny in parts and exceptionally horrific in others. If you enjoy a fresh take on fantasy, you have to check The Blacktongue Thief out!

    🐇 I couldn't put it down

By Christopher Buehlman ,

Why should I read it?

6 authors picked The Blacktongue Thief as one of their favorite books, and they share why you should read it.

What is this book about?

Set in a world of goblin wars, stag-sized battle ravens, and assassins who kill with deadly tattoos, USA Today bestselling author Christopher Buehlman's The Blacktongue Thief begins a 'dazzling' (Robin Hobb) fantasy adventure unlike any other.

Kinch Na Shannack owes the Takers Guild a small fortune for his education as a thief, which includes (but is not limited to) lock-picking, knife-fighting, wall-scaling, fall-breaking, lie-weaving, trap-making, plus a few small magics. His debt has driven him to lie in wait by the old forest road, planning to rob the next traveler that crosses his path.

But today, Kinch Na Shannack has…

My 3rd favorite read in 2026

Book cover of Yellowface

Mark A. Rayner ❤️ loved this book because...

This came highly recommended from one of our guests on Re-Creative, and I was not disappointed. Kuang's satire is funny and savage. The commentary on cancel culture is also well-observed. You may not enjoy the ending (don't worry, no spoilers) but the ride is worth it even if you don't.

Don‘t forget about my book 😀

Alpha Max

By Mark A. Rayner ,

Book cover of Alpha Max

What is my book about?

Maximilian Tundra is about to have an existential crisis of cosmic proportions.

When a physical duplicate of him appears in his living room, wearing a tight-fitting silver lamé unitard and speaking with an English accent, Max knows something bad is about to happen. Bad doesn’t cover it. Max discovers he’s the only human being who can prevent the end of the world, and not just on his planet! In the multiverse, infinite Earths will be destroyed.

Personally, Max thinks the multiverse is in big trouble, because he can’t even keep his toenails clipped on the regular, let alone stop the apocalypse. His only “allies” are a race of manic pixie aliens and dozens of other versions of himself; and let’s face it, both groups are annoying as heck!

From award-winning author Mark A. Rayner, Alpha Max is a silly and serious spoof of the science fiction and superhero movie trope of multiple realities. Fans of the humorous science fiction of Douglas Adams and the black humor and satire of Kurt Vonnegut will love this dark comedy that will make you think as well as laugh.
