Full of commitments we need to keep. Full of plans to be made. Full of goals and dreams to chase. Full of inputs and incoming.
The white space disappears.
We find ourselves on a treadmill that keeps moving faster. Unable to catch our breath for just a moment.
We can walk another path.
We can live another way.
We can choose to walk with simplicity.
A Step in a Simpler Direction: I believe deeply in the power of simplicity. It’s become a passionate subject. Broader than this, it’s become a framework for how I try to live. Something I am always seeking to bring into my life.
One part of this simplicity journey is about discarding. Finding ways to remove things from our lives. Whether they be possessions, commitments, toxic relationships, or something else we realise is dragging us down.
Reduction is an important step. But it’s just a step.
What is more important is what we get back.
What This Book Is About
For the last decade, I’ve been on my own simplicity journey.
As I have walked this path, some interesting things started to happen.
The more I seemed to give up, the more I got back.
Clarity has taken the place of confusion.
Focus replaced distraction.
Busyness was overcome by space to breathe.
Complexity gave way to simplicity.
I’ve experimented with aspects of minimalism, 80/20 and other tools along the way. Keeping what works, letting go of what does not. Sharing my thoughts and experiences at my blog and through some of my other books.
I have come to realise what I have been seeking most on this journey are ways to live with a quiet, calm, focused intention. In short, my vision of a good life.
I believe we can all benefit from making life simpler. But we must find our own fit to personalise our experience.
This book contains a collection of reflections on walking with simplicity, and how committing to this path can help us live well.
Some of these essays have appeared elsewhere and are reworked, and updated, here. Others are brand new for this book. All have a thread connecting them that means they have earned their spot in this collection.
In keeping with the theme, I’ve stripped things down to the core.
Like most of my books, this is a concise read. A short book with big ideas.
The essays can be enjoyed independently of each other, so you can read the book in an order that suits you best. As much as possible, I have tried to ensure the content will not age with time.
My hope is you will come back to this book and the essays will continue to provide fuel for thought, value and ideas for you.
Most importantly, I hope this book inspires you to find your own version of a simple life. A life full of the things and people that matter most, whatever that may mean for you.
What you will find is a simple life is a good life.
Simplicity can be an antidote to the modern feelings of overwhelm so many of us feel. We can remove distractions and focus on the essential.
