Okay, I'm not sure if The New American Bible qualifies for a book recommendation, but my answer is: YES, of course! In March, 2025, I joined a challenge to read the entire bible in 63 days. In honesty, I finished in 65 days. The schedule, provided by a Dominincan Order priest, kept me on schedule. Was it easy? No way, but I'm grateful for the experience of a general sweep of everything story and record in both the Old and New Testaments. Many of the passages were like visiting a familiar friend. And now I have a more general understanding as I continue my own exploration with daily scripture readings. I'm so grateful that I accomplished a challenge that I'd considered nearly impossible, and I'd be willing to share the schedule with anyone interested. You can do it!!

I developed a great affinity for Marcellus, the octupus and Tova, the kind-spirited woman who befriended him. For a debut novel, the writing was witty and refreshing. The character development could have used a little more depth, but the pace and exploration of Tova's personal story kept me interested! Also, after attending a talk by the author, I admired her down-to-earth approach to writing and her delightful sense of humor!

I listened to Slaughtehouse Five narrated by actor Ethan Hawke. Yes, a difficult story to experience, filled with profanity and the conjuiring of graphic images. But the writing? Brilliant. Sometimes, we're meant not to like what we see and hear, and Kurt Vonnegut's experience as a soldier who witnessed the destruction of Dresden during World War II is the foundation for fantastical story. His searing descriptions, unsympathetic characters, and cynisicm may belie his anti-war message. Many dislike Vonnegut's tome, and the book remains banned in some libraries. But I discovered a story worth my time and consideration. The classics, like Slaughthouse-Five, remain the classics.
A special fiftieth anniversary edition of Kurt Vonnegut’s masterpiece, “a desperate, painfully honest attempt to confront the monstrous crimes of the twentieth century” (Time), featuring a new introduction by Kevin Powers, author of the National Book Award finalist The Yellow Birds
