❤️ loved this book because...
Picked up Silence knowing almost nothing about it, and I had to look into the historical context. Reading about the persecution of Christians in 17th-century Japan was.. not easy to digest. I like books that make me learn something new. Anyways, reading Endo’s Silence made that far fetched history felt personal. The contrast between the priest's rich and soulful inner world, and the silence of the outside world - God’s silence, the state’s indifference, and the detachment of the people - are very well laid out by Endō, it was so heartbroken.
