Will I love Silence?

I love this book because it confronts faith in its most painful and uncomfortable form.

What struck me deeply was how the silence of God becomes louder than any answer. I felt emotionally torn watching the characters struggle between belief, doubt, and survival under unbearable pressure. This story made me question how faith survives when suffering seems endless and divine presence feels absent.

Few books have challenged me to think about belief, suffering, and moral conflict in such a profound way.

I’m so impressed by the sense of closeness, the claustrophobic setting, and the relationships Endo evokes in this novel.

The intensely atmospheric language perfectly matches the storyline, which involves Portuguese Jesuit priests arriving in seventeenth-century Japan, where they are martyred in devastatingly cruel and grotesque ways. But that’s not to say there isn’t beauty in the novel, either.

I found joy in the historical details, setting, and the rendering of individual lives—the characters’ anguish and existential crises speaking to me through imagined centuries and deft translation.

Japan’s Tokugawa Era was created by the first shogun, Tokugawa Ieyasu, in 1603. Ieyasu withdrew Japan from international trade and relations and created a closed, feudal society.  For 250 years, the Japanese conducted international trade only with the Dutch and Chinese, and even then only in specially designated trading ports such as the manmade island of Dejima in Nagasaki harbor. Ieyasu also brutally suppressed Christianity and expelled European missionaries.
