Book cover of The Wicker Witch

Somer Canon ❤️ loved this book because...

I love a story where the setting of the tale is a character. This particular tale could absolutely not take place anywhere else. The Wicker Witch has that quality, and it sucked me in immediately. What was doubly great about that, is that this book subtly keeps the setting in the foreground of everything that happens. It's good technical writing, and it's great artistic storytelling.

What is this book about?

A fast-paced story of survival, terror, family, and friendship.

The people of Wicker thought the mountain belonged to them—purchased with blood, sweat, and resilience. They forgot the deal their ancestors made. They forgot that their mountain belonged to something ancient, powerful, and hungry.

Charlotte Crowe and Rebecca Greenleigh grew up as best friends on the mountain, descendants of the original settlers of Wicker and inheritors of a terrible secret. They expected to grow old on their mountain. They did not expect the return of the wolves, the bone chimes appearing overnight in the trees, or their neighbors turning on one…

My 2nd favorite read in 2024

Book cover of Brimstone

Somer Canon ❤️ loved this book because...

This book was all over the place emotionally, and yet still felt put-together and steady. A lot happens and the plot is very strong. But what really sets this book up as one of my favorites is that it has an almost-perfect ending. Endings are so hard, and I sympathize with that and tend to be forgiving of an otherwise wonderful book kind of dropping the ball on the end. But Brimstone really nails that end, and I closed the book with such a feeling of peace and happiness, that it really left an impression on me as a reader.

Why should I read it?

What is this book about?

A new dark historical fantasy from the “supremely gifted”* Cherie Priest, author of Mapelcroft and Boneshaker.

In the trenches of Europe during the Great War, Tomás Cordero operated a weapon more devastating than any gun: a flame projector that doused the enemy in liquid fire. Having left the battlefield a shattered man, he comes home to find yet more tragedy—for in his absence, his wife has died of the flu. Haunted by memories of the woman he loved and the atrocities he perpetrated, Tomás dreams of fire and finds himself setting match to flame when awake....

Book cover of Hunter of the Dead

Somer Canon ❤️ loved this book because...

This is a vampire book. I don't think I need to tell you that the market for vampire stories is varied and saturated. So when I come across a vampire book that really tells a different tale, while still respecting the centuries worth of lore and preceding tales, I am a very happy reader. Hunter of the Dead is an intense, action-packed story that also has some of the established characteristics of vampire lore well represented. It's hard to tackle an occasionally overdone genre and come out fresh and unique. This book managed that handily.

Why should I read it?

1 author picked Hunter of the Dead as one of their favorite books, and they share why you should read it.

What is this book about?

Someone has begun targeting vampires.

Vampire leaders of the thirteen Houses attribute the string of recent losses to over-zealous vampire hunters. Only Cicatrice, the most ancient and powerful vampire in the world, suspects that the semi-legendary Hunter of the Dead may be the real culprit.

Carter Price, a vampire hunter who despises the way his profession is becoming centralized and corporatized, begins to suspect the Hunter of the Dead is back, too—and no longer distinguishing between vampires and mortals. Against his better judgment, Price agrees to work with Cicatrice.

The uneasy allies attempt to uncover the truth about the Hunter,…
