Book cover of House of Bone and Rain

Mercedes M. Yardley ❤️ loved this book because...

Wow, this story packs a punch! It's beautifully written and violent, full of anger, sweetness, horror, and heart. I fell in love with these characters and watched as they made terrible choices and fought for the people they loved. Gabino's voice really shone through. Highly recommend if you have the stomach for it.

What is this book about?

In this "stunningly visceral" (New York Times Book Review) novel, a group of young men seek vengeance after one of their mothers is murdered in a Puerto Rican slum; STAND BY ME with a haunted, obsidian-dark heart.

For childhood friends Gabe, Xavier, Tavo, Paul, and Bimbo, death has always been close. Hurricanes. Car accidents. Gang violence. Suicide. Estamos rodeados de fantasmas was Gabe’s grandmother’s refrain. We are surrounded by ghosts. But this time is different. Bimbo's mom has been shot dead. We’re gonna kill the guys who killed her Bimbo swears. And they all agree.

Feral with grief, Bimbo has…

Book cover of Incidents Around the House

Mercedes M. Yardley ❤️ loved this book because...

Holy snap, I loved this book! I read and write so much horror that it's quite difficult to unsettle me, but that's exactly what INCIDENTS AROUND THE HOUSE did. I came into it cold, unfamiliar with the premise and format, and WOW. What a creepy little book with both heartwarming and heart-wrenching content. I cared deeply for the little girl and her well-being. It was written so well that I could see it play out cinematically. It's my favorite book of the year thus far. Highly recommended.

Other Mommy is getting restless, stronger, bolder. Only…

Book cover of All the Light We Cannot See

Mercedes M. Yardley ❤️ loved this book because...

What an utterly charming book. It's written beautifully, has characters I cared for, and was literary while still being easy to digest and understand. It often delves into the brutality of war but the chapters are so short that you're in the darkness for a brief time before taking a breather. I enjoyed it immensely.
