Book cover of Prophet Song

❤️ loved this book because...

The author created a very realistic rendering of a post-democratic world in a society that had been previously stable (in this instance Ireland). I learned what it would take for a mother to flee with her children, to become a “boat person” in order to survive. This book not only made me more interested in the trauma of people fleeing political oppression, but it also convincingly showed how no society is fully politically stable.

Book cover of The Hunter

❤️ loved this book because...

This is Tana French’s follow up to “The Searcher”. I am a big Tana French fan, and found both The Searcher and The Hunter extraordinary. French’s ability to immerse you into the world of a small Irish community is spot on. Although these to books are not her usual police procedural novels, but much more character/community driven, and I found them exceptional.

What is this book about?

It’s a blazing summer when two men arrive in a small village in the West of Ireland. One of them is coming home. Both of them are coming to get rich. One of them is coming to die.

Cal Hooper took early retirement from Chicago PD and moved to rural Ireland looking for peace. He’s found it, more or less: he’s built a relationship with a local woman, Lena, and he’s gradually turning Trey Reddy from a half-feral teenager into a good kid going good places. But then Trey’s long-absent father reappears, bringing along an English millionaire and a scheme…

Book cover of The Deluge

❤️ loved this book because...

I think I often read books to learn what might be around the corner in my life experience and how I might be able to prepare beforehand for the tragedies that may come. Some would think this would be depressing, but I feel that having this insight gives me comfort. This tome, although post-apocalyptic, is honestly very realistic in what will shortly happen to our world with the effects of climate change. Let’s say the first climate tragedy depicted in The Deluge was the burning of LA. This book details the political and economic factors that fail our planet, our world.

What is this book about?
