I was drawn into this book from the first page and couldn’t put it down. What I particularly loved about it was the way the author took three strong characters and intertwined their lives. All of them were “other” in some way, people who felt they didn’t fit in, and I loved this as you don’t often get characters like that as protagonists.
Hazel, one of the main characters, is anxious, probably on the spectrum, and very uncomfortable with life. Virginia has rebuilt her life after trauma but is reeling from a terrible accusation that threatens her future. Harry, a teenage boy living in an abusive and dangerous situation, is expertly drawn. The three of them shouldn’t be friends, but they are. Brilliantly written, authentic situations and wonderful characterization. I couldn’t put it down.

I see fine writing as an informative and entertaining conversation with a stranger I just met on a plane who has interesting things to say about the world. I dip into my well-thumbed edition of this inspiring book every so often, but in 2003, I was reading from it daily as it led me by the hand through the ups and downs of my own creations as I tackled a new novel.

I grew up all around history—my childhood home was across the street from where one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence used to live—and have long been fascinated by the connections between American and other countries’ histories, especially in the old ports and harbors where sailing ships connected America to the world. I’ve lived and taught for the past two decades in Hong Kong, one of the world’s great ports and a place to think about the American Revolution not as “our” history but as part of how to explain Americans to the world.
What were the economic motives behind the Revolution? This question has been a subject of historical debate for over a century, often with the spurious assumption (in my view) that if the Revolution had economic motives, then it could not also have ideological meanings. And yet, even ideologues need money.
Economic explanations of the revolution have often suffered from being too general. The economies of Massachusetts and Virginia were so different that it is difficult to craft an economic explanation that encompasses both. Halfway through my first novel, I realized that I was writing in a genre that had received little critical study and had almost no visibility. To find my way around the genre—and my place within it—I began reading heavily and before I knew it, I had read well over 200 lesbian mystery novels and devoured almost every serious review and critical study The dozen books I have written over the last decade reflect this study. Nikki Baker is the first African-American writer of lesbian mysteries and her character Virginia Kelly—who works as a financial analyst in Chicago—is the first African-American lesbian sleuth. This makes it important, but what makes the book outstanding is the writing, especially the voice of the protagonist. Jones gave me the full experience of pointless suffering, outright maliciousness, slow despair, and intergenerational trauma while also caring for my tender heart. How did he manage it?
