Edsel tells the very
dramatic story of how Allied art experts, known as the Monuments, Fine Arts,
and Archives (MFAA) or Monuments Men, raced through Italy to rescue art
masterpieces and to secure endangered monuments during the Nazi retreat in
1944. A special focus on the cities of Naples, Rome, Florence, and Pisa’s
treasures.
I was especially fascinated
by the story of Frederick Hartt, who loved Florentine art and risked his life
to reach the city then pursued the lost artworks in a race across Italy into
Austria to return them. Many of the
artworks the Monuments Men saved are the treasures we see in Italy’s museums
today.

I started my career in tourism but soon discovered my passion for urban heritage. Working as a site manager for a world heritage site, I gathered extensive insights on various levels of heritage management and urban governance from many colleagues around the world. Today there is no single project or meeting that does not address the challenges of climate change. Obtaining my Ph.D. late in life, in Heritage-Based Urban Development, I quicklybecame convinced that the traditional ideas of what cultural heritage is do not reflect the situation today and hinder giving cultural heritage a role in climate change prevention and adaption, beyond the narrative that it has to be preserved.
The key contribution of this book was the systemic understanding of cultural heritage. The collected articles and case studies represent a holistic and integrated concept of cultural heritage. Seeing cultural heritage as a social and political construct, as the authors describe it, opened the door for two new approaches:
First, the integration of different types of heritage that are usually treated separately, e.g., intangible heritage, tangible heritage, etc. And, second, starting to focus on the social parts of cultural heritage, basically the role of people. In my personal view all heritage is only relevant if it is relevant to people, and this book helped me to shape this conviction.

Plunder combined three of my favorite things in one unputdownable story: art history, Italy, and the Napoleonic Era.
Veronese's enormous Wedding Feast at Cana, painted for the refectory wall at San Giorgio Maggiore in Venice, was seized with other masterpieces when Napoleon overcame the Austrians and wouldn't take Venice's neutrality as an answer. To this day it hangs in the Louvre, largely (pun intended) ignored because it’s opposite the Mona Lisa.
Salzman traces the common historic habit of swooping in like vultures during wartime to build one’s art collection, and for the first time I understood why Hitler thought himself justified in his own artistic pilfering!

When at 13, I declared that I’d become an Egyptologist, quite a lot of people thought it would pass. Fast forward 10 years, and I was starting a PhD on Egyptian mummies in museums – it did not pass. I journeyed from the Louvre where I was a gallery attendant trying to uncover the story of bodies buried in their garden, to England where I relocated with little English to pursue an Egyptology degree… and then two more! The ethics of human remains in museums is a complex topic: that’s why I like to make it more approachable to the public, from running my project Mummy Stories, to giving talks in pubs!
The Whole Picture is a very recent book, that needs little introduction: that’s always the sign of a great book.

I wish I could say otherwise but I related to this book personally, in ways that were both painful and visceral. The author handles difficult and sensitive topics very well, such that reading this work became it's both cathartic and emotionally healing. She also captures an important aspect of "educated" Black culture.

I have been fascinated by ancient Greece and Rome since I first saw Italy and Greece as a teenager, revisiting them whenever I can. I studied ancient history at Cambridge University and have written eight books about it, most recently The Colosseum.
