Garth Nix is an amazing author, and this is his most memorable book, as far as I’m concerned. While it’s sold as an adult book, the sharp-eyed reader will note the ties to Susan Cooper's famous The Dark is Rising. I remember it as a fantastic story, but returning to it was like returning to The Greatest American Hero.
So that’s where this book comes in handy. It’s modern, it’s fresh, and it has tight ties to mythology—not unlike Ben Aaronovitch’s Rivers of London. I also greatly respected that Garth Nix acknowledged his muse openly and with little Easter eggs. He even called the main character Susan! I adored this fast-paced, updated adventure of page-turning fun.

I write adult and young adult fantasy. I’ve always been fascinated with the concept of magic. While growing up in China, I often found myself immersed in fantasy literature based on Asian history, mythology, and legends. I enjoyed getting lost in the rich imaginary worlds where the characters came to life. These tales fed my imagination and inspired me to create my own magical adventures. The worldbuilding is lush, full of vivid details. The characters have amazing depth, never becoming one-dimensional stereotypes.
The protagonist is wonderfully complex. You sympathize with her at one point and then, in the next, she does something totally hateful. Her dark jealousies and obsession with her own beauty would make you despise her, but you’d also feel her frustration for having her ambition smothered as a woman in a patriarchal world.

Beneath the surface of this beautifully written old-style fairytale there lies a compelling examination of free will. This thematic depth adds a delicious, chewy meat to what is already an enjoyable romantic read. I loved the characters here. I think it’s because they’re centered around that weird but pivotal time in your life when you’re no longer a child but not quite an adult. While growing up in Spain, history was not my favorite subject. As told at school, it was a dreadful, long list of kings and battles. But, from time to time, I discovered, among the dry facts, a legend, a romanticized story of an event long past that ignited my imagination. Among these legends, the defeat of the last Visigoth king by the Arabs and the Asturian chieftain Pelayo’s consequent victory over them were my favorites. I believe these two stories, that figure so predominantly in my writing, are behind my love for books full of romance and adventure that take place in ancient worlds, like the ones I recommend here.
