Holy moly, I couldn't turn the pages fast enough. Absolutely loved it. The ending was chef's kiss good. Although it was published in 1985, the plot holds its own in the modern world, as do the relationships between the characters. Nothing much has changed re bullies and world leaders... With hints of the Hunger Games and Gladiator, I was swept away by the games, the machinations, and the political manoeuvring. 100% recommend.

Gillespie hits another home run with this thriller, and I binged it in a day!!! I did not see the interconnected twists, so kind of sat open mouthed when that was revealed!!! A fantastic cast of characters. All completely riveting in their own way - both evil and good. As a mother, my greatest fear has always been having a child snatched by a monster, so this book really hit home, especially with all the recent media about Madeleine McCann. It only takes a moment of inattention… This book was heartbreaking in a thousand different ways. 100% recommend. I have been a huge fan of Mark Gillespie's books for almost a decade now, and read everything he puts out.
