Colleen AF Venable Why Colleen loves this book

I'm a comedy nerd and I've read every oral retelling and book on the history of comedy I can get my hands on. Not only did this one make me laugh harder than any I've read, but their their path to success was as loopy as the airplane on the movie poster. You can feel the friendship of the creators and it's hard to not feel like you're friends with them as well by the end.

Book cover of Displacement

KG Mach Author Of Present, Still Missing

From my list on understanding the impact of war.

Why am I passionate about this?

History has always fascinated me. I majored in history as an undergrad, but what really shaped me was listening to people tell their stories. My earliest memories are of sitting with my grandparents and listening to them share bits of their lives with me. Those stories helped me understand that history is not a list of events, but rather a sharing of the human experience. Each of the stories in this book list highlights a moment in history, but they also show readers our humanity across time; that people have the same hopes and dreams no matter where they came from and what they experienced.

KG's book list on understanding the impact of war

KG Mach Why KG loves this book

This is a historical fiction graphic novel and a time-travel story that pulled me in immediately.

The main character, Kiku, goes back in time and experiences her grandmother’s time in the Japanese Internment camps. Even though I have read several novels about this topic, the illustrations accompanying the story proved very powerful for me and led to a new level of understanding.

This story is timely and impactful and draws connections to the present. It is a reminder that history is cyclical and that displacement can happen to any group of people.

By Kiku Hughes ,

Why should I read it?

4 authors picked Displacement as one of their favorite books, and they share why you should read it. This book is for kids age 12, 13, 14, and 15.

What is this book about?

Kiku is on vacation in San Francisco when suddenly she finds herself displaced to the 1940s Japanese-American internment camp that her late grandmother, Ernestina, was forcibly relocated to during World War II.

These displacements keep occurring until Kiku finds herself 'stuck' back in time. Living alongside her young grandmother and other Japanese-American citizens in internment camps, Kiku gets the education she never received in history class. She witnesses the lives of Japanese-Americans who were denied their civil liberties and suffered greatly, but managed to cultivate community and commit acts of resistance in order to survive.

Book cover of Nimona

SJ Sindu Author Of Shakti

From my list on diverse graphic with magic for teens and tweens.

Why am I passionate about this?

When I was a kid, I moved from Sri Lanka to the US without any knowledge of English. I first learned the language through the stories I watched and then the ones I read. I spent hours in the library and was most strongly attracted to stories with magic and witches, which allowed me to escape my own life and find refuge in my imagination. These stories are why I became a writer, and many of these stories still hold sway over me today. When life gets hard, I love to escape into these magical worlds.

No list of magic would be complete without Nimona. Everyone’s talking about the Netflix adaptation, but if you ask me, the original graphic novel is not to be missed. A wonderfully quirky romp that somehow achieves moments of intense poignancy and beauty, this is a book for everyone.

SJ Sindu Why SJ loves this book

I’ve loved the magical girl genre for a long time, ever since I first watched Sailor Moon when I was eight years old. This great duology for teens flips the genre on its head with a trans boy as its protagonist and wonderfully explores the nuances of what it means to be a hero. And it’s quite funny, too.

Who doesn’t love Miyazaki? With the absolutely beautiful art tradition of Studio Ghibli on display, this book is the first in a series based on the movie of the same name.
