Unknown Author Why Damaris loves this book

Every once in a while, you come across a book so immersive, so beautifully written, that it refuses to leave your mind long after you've turned the last page. The Covenant of Water is that book for me.

At over 700 pages, it's a commitment - but one I'd make again in a heartbeat. Set in Kerala and spanning three generations, this novel is an absolute masterclass in storytelling. Abraham Verghese weaves together history, medicine, love, loss, and resilience with such depth and beauty that I often found myself pausing just to absorb a particularly stunning passage.

The story follows a family cursed with a mysterious affliction; at least one person in each generation drowns, no matter how careful they are around water. But at its core, this book is about so much more than that. It's about human connection, about fate and the quiet strength of those who bear…

I love Jane Harper’s novels. Always a rather lonely man with issues, he investigates a death in the Australian outback. But it is so much more than the usual detective story. To me, as someone with no experience living in the outback, Harper writes convincing pen portraits of characters living in a hostile landscape where everyone has secrets. I could almost feel the heat. By the way, I was torn between recommending this and The Dry, both of which share similar themes, as my second favorite book.

I won’t give the plot away other than to say it’s a great mystery story rather than an action-packed adventure. How did this man die, and why? Harper weaves a well-crafted tale, gripping right up to the end.

Emma Tallon Author Of Runaway Girl

From my list on strong and resilient women.

Why am I passionate about this?

Of the 16 books I have written, to date, every single one of them features strong women. I like to think I'm channeling a little bit of myself in there, or perhaps I'm simply projecting the sort of strength I'd like to possess. I don't know. What I do know is that with all that's going on in the world, it's more important now than ever before to remember how strong we can all be. To be strong women, to support strong women, to seek inspiration from strong women, and to inspire the next generation of women to do the same. And that's why I've chosen to recommend books on this subject.

Emma's book list on strong and resilient women

Emma Tallon Why Emma loves this book

This isn't a book I'd usually pick up, but after hearing rave reviews, I decided to give it a go, and I'm so glad I did! It's a slow-burn suspenseful crime novel, which would usually lose my attention as I'm more a fan of fast-paced reads, but Will's writing is so wonderfully rich and vibrant that it just wouldn't put me down! Yes, it had me that gripped.

The story follows Thanh, a young Vietnamese woman who has been trafficked into the country (England) along with her sister. They get separated, and Thanh is sold off as a 'wife' to a farmer in the Fenns who keeps her there, hidden from the rest of the world.

The story is told in first person, and it gives a pretty stark insight into the domestic horrors of human trafficking and the bleak options she faces. But it's also an incredible story of…

Carol Moreira Why Carol loves this book

This award-winning novel is brilliantly human, witty and original.

The star of the novel and its narrator is Tama, a young magpie who is rescued as a chick by Marnie, a kind-hearted farmer’s wife. Tama doesn’t know what to make of his new human carer and her husband Rob, a sheep farmer facing hard times, but he settles in and observes the couple’s relationship. He feels deeply protective of Marnie who is abused by her husband and very much alone in the isolated location. Tama can speak and the couple end up putting him on social media, reviving their finances and gaining a whole new fame thanks to the bird’s wit and novelty. When he’s outside, Tama’s family warn him that humans are wicked and not to be trusted. Meanwhile, he observes and worries about Marnie’s increasingly precarious situation. The story’s unexpected and dramatic conclusion is sparked by the community’s…

Book cover of See You in September

Nikki Crutchley Author Of To the Sea

From my list on an isolated setting.

Why am I passionate about this?

I am a crime writer from New Zealand and have set all of my books either in small towns or isolated settings. The appeal of isolated settings, for me, is that social norms are lacking, people are often making their own rules in which to live by and they have chosen to live this life for particular reasons. The physical environment of isolated settings holds power and danger, but also beauty. In the five books I’ve chosen, all settings are stunning in their own way but with the introduction of characters with their own stories and histories, the beauty often contradicts the dark events going on and the secrets being kept.

Nikki's book list on an isolated setting

Nikki Crutchley Why Nikki loves this book

After breaking up with her boyfriend during a trip to New Zealand, Cassy meets a group of people who invite her to stay with them at their farming collective.

This book perfectly portrays the way someone is drawn into a cult, slowly giving themselves up to the beliefs of the leader; in this case, Justin and his prophecy about the Last Day. When Cassy finally agrees to stay with the group, she is taken further and further into rural New Zealand, eventually ending up on a jetty, where a boat is waiting to take her to the farm.

Through Cassy’s eyes we first see only wild beauty, and happy, content people but that gradually changes and she eventually sees the valley for what it is, a hidden place for Justin to preach to his people and plan for the Last Day, safe from prying eyes.

Cassy smiled, blew them a kiss.
'See you in September,' she said.
It was a throwaway line. Just words uttered casually by a young woman in a hurry. And then she'd gone.

It was supposed to be a short trip - a break in New Zealand before her best friend's wedding. But when Cassy waved goodbye to her parents, they never dreamed that it would be years before they'd see her again.

Having broken up with her boyfriend, Cassy accepts an invitation to stay in an idyllic farming collective. Overcome by the peace and beauty of the valley and swept…

Kylie Orr Author Of The Eleventh Floor

From my list on losing yourself in motherhood (the good and the bad).

Why am I passionate about this?

As the mother of four children, I have observed over the last twenty years how women are viewed and often judged under a stifling patriarchal lens. Writing about motherhood in all its glorious colours has been one way for me to channel my frustrations. Stories that reach out to women and give them a voice when they feel unheard are vital. In a world where appearances and facades are taking over our social media feeds, where filters blur out the rough edges of our lives, I’m more determined than ever to write female characters who are raw and flawed but also valued as an integral part of an evolving society.

Kylie's book list on losing yourself in motherhood (the good and the bad)

Kylie Orr Why Kylie loves this book

I love any book that delves into the psychology of cults. This is a fictional account of a real-life cult that existed not far from where I live, and I have grown up hearing about the victims. The charismatic and highly disturbed female leader was an unusual twist on the standard stories we read about cults that are often led by men.

Her determination to be the ‘mother’ of every child, have them all look the same (blond hair cut into a bob), and worship her was infuriating and intriguing. Taking vulnerable women, who were also mothers, and luring them into her secret commune, forcing them to make sacrifices, including their own children, deeply affected me as a woman and a mother.

Deliciously evil.

Set against a ticking clock, this "haunting" and "atmospheric" thriller that inspired the Hulu miniseries "The Clearing" pits a ruthless cult against a mother's love, revealing that our darkest secrets are the hardest ones to leave behind (Sally Hepworth, New York Times bestselling author of The Good Sister).
