As a child, I fell in love with picture books and the magical, whimsical worlds they opened! I recall snuggling up and listening to these tales being read to me. Later, after a bit of a struggle, I learned to read myself. From there, there was no stopping me. My library card was my most treasured, most loved possession! I quickly moved on to chapter books, then to novels, but never outgrew my love and passion for picture books! As a former teacher and now great-grandparent, I treasure the opportunity to usher children down the rabbit hole of reading!
I am recommending this book because I fell in love with it as a child.
First, those beautiful watercolor illustrations of pure whimsy and secondly, I secretly loved the mischievous squirrel Nutkin and his riddles. As an adult, I love cuddling with my family's nutkins and sharing a laugh and a lesson on the sly.
There is just something special about sharing with your grandchildren a book you loved as a child!
The Tale of Squirrel Nutkin is an original classic by Beatrix Potter.
Beatrix Potter's famous tale of a naughty squirrel who loses his tail is as popular today as it was when it was first published over 100 years ago. Join Nutkin, his brother Twinkleberry and all his cousins as they make their way over to Owl Island to gather nuts. See what happens when Old Brown, the terrifying owl guardian of the island decides he has had enough of silly Nutkin's cheekiness! Ouch!!

Remember the grouchy old guy who yelled at you for being on this lawn? Well, this is the hilarious squirrel version! I admit, laughed way too hard at this battle of wits stories.
Secretly, I was rooting for the squirrels! What I loved about this book is that the squirrels are the ones that find the charming solution that allows all to live in peace and co-exist!
Little ones and grown-ups will giggle through multiple reads of Those Darn Squirrels!
From the creators of Dragons Love Tacos comes the story of what happens when a grumpy old man and some mischievous squirrels match witsβwith hilarious results.
Old Man Fookwire is a grump. The only thing he likes to do is paint pictures of the birds that visit his backyard. The problem is, they fly south every winter, leaving him sad and lonely.

I love, love, love books that are full of whimsy, and feed my childhood soul. Boy, does this book deliver! Featuring squirrels in miniature, homemade sets enjoying everyday experiences and tiny moments.
You may think you know what squirrels do all day...but Mr. Peanuts is no ordinary squirrel. Instead of climbing trees, he plays the piano. ('Moonlight Sonutta' is his favourite.) Instead of scurrying through the woods, he reads books (such as A Tail of Two Cities). But everything is more fun with company, so Mr. Peanuts writes a letter to Cousin Squirrel and invites him for a visit!
Featuring candid photographs of wild squirrels in handcrafted, homemade miniature settings, this irresistible book is sure to surprise and delight readers and animal lovers of everyβ¦

This Squirrel book covers all the history and serves it with a big dose of nostalgia!
Do you recall being perched in front of the telly, bowl of Fruit Loops in hand, watching the latest episode of Rocky and Bullwinkle? I sure do! All your favorite, beloved squirrels are here. It's like the Who's, Who of the Squirrel World!
Nuts About Squirrels is the first book to provide a comprehensive look at how the bushy-tailed creatures have found their way into the mass media, as well as in mythology and folklore of the past. Squirrels are ubiquitous media marvels and Corrigan covers their treatment in books, newspapers, television, movies, public relations, advertising, video games and more.
Nuts About Squirrels is a fun read, whether you love or loathe these furry characters that inhabit our backyards, city parks, forests, purple mountains and fruited plains. They are all here: Nutkin and Timmy Tiptoes from the classic books of Beatrix Potter; Bullwinkleβ¦
Iβve always thought books with fake relationship storylines are incredibly interesting and entertaining. Thereβs so much nuance in creating a believable scenario in which two people agree that pretending to be enamored with each other is the easier/better option than telling the truth, and there is so much awkwardness that goes with pretending to be in love with someone you dislike or barely know. That fascination, along with an appreciation for humor, is what inspired me to write two different fake dating romantic comedies of my own, The Wedding Date Deal and The Gratitude Guarantee. Itβs also why I canβt get enough of books like the ones on this list!
The thing I loved most about this book is how impervious Audrey is to Flintβs charms at the beginning of the book. Sheβs a scientist who doesnβt watch movies and doesnβt know or care that heβs a massive starβsheβs truly just there for the squirrels sheβs trying to research!
It was a delight to watch Flint try to charm Audrey and figure out what makes her tick since sheβs not like other girls and to watch her developing feelings for him while navigating the spotlight that comes with being his (fake) girlfriend. I also love the sibling relationships that both of them have. Nothingβs funnier than a brutally honest group text with your brothers or sisters!
Heβs Hollywoodβs biggest star. She wouldnβt know him from the pizza delivery guy.
Iβm a wildlife biologist in a tiny mountain town, not some kind of law-breaking celebrity stalker. At least not on purpose.
It was an accident when I wandered onto the property of one of Hollywoodβs hottest movie stars. Five minutes ago, I'd never even heard of Flint Hawthorne. I definitely didnβt know he lives in Silver Creek.
When Iβm detained for trespassing, the last thing I expect is to trade my handcuffs for a designer gown. All I wanted was permission to conduct my research on aβ¦
If you want to live your best life, youβll need to face some fears. Iβve faced a lot of my fears: great white sharks, sky-diving, caves, spiders, meat sauces. Iβm still scared, but what else can I do? Stay in bed my whole life? I love writing and illustrating for kids. Itβs how Iβve spent the last twenty years. Iβve written and/or illustrated almost fifty books. The scariest part is figuring out how to start. Thinking of an ending is scary too. Then thereβs all that stuff in the middle. Ugh! My first books about facing fears were Hippo and Rabbit. Now, Scaredy Cats. Fear gives me ideas!
Iβm a creature of habit. So is Scaredy Squirrel. We both know the comforts of feeling safe in perfect routines where nothing is left to chance, where nothing can go wrongβ¦right?Β Β
Scaredy writes lists of his emergency procedures, draws grids of his safety equipment, diagrams his secret exit strategies. I feel this poor squirrelβs pain. How many nights have I lain awake before a school visit mulling over my presentations? No plan is fool proof. So when Scaredy accidentally falls from his tree, he does what he must: thinks quickly and improvises. And discovers a secret ability he never knew he had.Β
In the end, Melanie Watt gives Scaredy most of his old routine back, but now itβs balanced with a healthy dose of adventure. Perfectly balanced, Iβd say.
The first book in the Scaredy Squirrel series is a comical story of an endearing squirrel who learns what can happen when heβs brave enough to take a risk.

As a girl, I would roll around on the floor with my Labrador retriever, beg my parents for horseback-riding lessons, and dream of being a vet. A proficiency in language and lack of science skills led me to writing instead, but my intense love of animals never waned. I adore adventure stories featuring animal characters and human ones, and some form of communication between them. Thatβs why I wrote Shannonβs Odyssey which, like many Middle Grade novels, also explores family secrets and the all-important act of forgiveness. Itβs not fantasy but contains mystical elements rooted in reality, because who doesnβt want to believe magic exists in our everyday lives?
Clever, comic-book reading, word-loving Flora is more cynical than ever since her parentsβ separation. Sheβs sure her mother loves a shepherdess lamp more than her own daughter. When Flora saves a squirrel sucked up by a neighborβs vacuum and he returns with super strength and the ability to understand language and write poetry, she finds a kindred spirit. I love this book for its colorful (human and squirrel) characters and subtle exploration of family dynamics. And I love that Floraβs journey, which is emotional rather than physical, isnβt wrapped up with a tidy bow at the end.
Holy unanticipated occurrences! A cynic meets an unlikely superhero in a genre-breaking new novel by a master storyteller.
It begins, as the best superhero stories do, with a tragic accident that has unexpected consequences. The squirrel never saw it coming - the vacuum cleaner, that is. As for self-described cynic Flora Belle Buckman, she has read every issue of the comic book Terrible Things Can Happen to You! so she is just the right person to step in and save him. What neither can predict is that Ulysses (the squirrel) has been born anew, with powers of strength, flight andβ¦
Iβve been a comic book nerd forever and a comic book historian for the past fifteen years, specializing in the history of female superheroes and writing books about Wonder Woman, Lois Lane, Catwoman, and more. A lot of amazing heroines have been featured in adaptations that have introduced them to a larger audience, but there are so many other great characters still waiting to get their chance to shine. Iβm excited to share a few of them that I really love with you here, as well as spotlight a diverse collection of creators and characters that deserve a closer look.
Marvelβs wide array of movies and TV shows have brought many of their heroes to life, but unfortunately, Squirrel Girl has yet to make the jump. This is a shame, since sheβs defeated some of Marvelβs most dastardly foes in incredibly creative ways. She eats nuts, she kicks butts, and she uses her squirrel-based abilities to tackle villains with her own optimistic, STEM-infused perspective. Northβs writing is charming and hilarious, and Hendersonβs art is a perfect pairing that sets the bookβs fun, energetic tone. Itβs such a good time, basically joy distilled into comic book form.

Iβve always chased that child-like wonderβthe intoxicating mix of passion, adventure, and discovery. Growing up, I sought books that could capture that magic, and as a writer, I now understand how rare and powerful it is to evoke those raw emotions. These books gave me that spark, inspiring me both personally and creatively. They even motivated me to create Visual Novel, a tool designed to bring stories to life and immerse readers further into their worlds. I hope this list rekindles that sense of innocent wonder and reminds you of the beauty and weight of youthful imagination.
This book hit me like a spark I didnβt know I needed. I first picked up this book because of the cover- I was expecting an action-packed series what I got was even better. Dragons are cool, yes, but the real magic is how the story weaves creativity, mystery, and emotion into everyday life.
I was hooked by the quiet, reflective moments just as much as the tension. It made me think about the hidden connections in life and how even small choices can have huge ripples.

My journey as a writer began in correlation with my career as a family doctor. After reading Dr. Jacques Ferronβs, books, I knew I wanted to be an author as well as a doctor. While pursuing my medical career, I wrote medical articles and books. My husband and I have also been featured in Chicken Soup for the Soul of Quebecers with the story Witness of the Last Breath. This is the story of the last night of my daughter-in-law dying of lung cancer. Before she died, I promised Marie-NoΓ«lle that I would pursue my writing career to change the world one young reader at a time. And I did.
Martha Speaks is the famous speaking dog. I recommend this chapter book as it relates to my book.
In this story, two children exchange their lives with that of their dog for a day. I like this original scenario because it can teach great lessons on being happy with who you are and what you have. At the end of the book, the author gathered new words in a glossary.
Readers can also follow the step-by-step experiment at the end to become a dog for the day. Do not hesitate to read this book with your children and make them speak about their understanding of the story.
Hypothesis: "ItΒs easier being a dog than being a human." This seems pretty safe to say, but the notion is put to the test in this funny, action-packed, full-color chapter book based on the PBS showMartha Speaks. When Carolina is turned into a dog, she finds out how irresistible mud, meat, and squirrels can beΒ and ends up at the shelter! Then T.D. volunteers to live as a dog for a day. Is it as easy at it looks? By the end, readers will not only have had a good laugh, theyΒll know the difference between empathy and sympathy, mannersβ¦
