Book cover of I Want My Hat Back

Kim Howard Author Of The Naked Streak

From my list on picture books about clothes (or the lack-thereof!).

Why am I passionate about this?

I love writing children’s picture books that bring you some relatable snapshot of life and infuse it with humor and heart. The more chaotic or silly, the better! When I wrote The Naked Streak, every parent who talked with me about the book had their own hilarious clothes (or lack of clothes!) story to share about their kid, which inspired me to put together this list. Toddlers definitely have their own opinions about their clothes, and I hope families can connect with the wonderful characters and books on this list.

Kim Howard Why Kim loves this book

I love a book where you get to be inside the joke.

Bear is hilarious, and the way Jon Klassen tells the story through just his characters’ eyes is enough to hook me. Bear is so kind and patient, until he most definitely isn’t. Anytime one of my kids can’t find their hat, I think of this story.

This book is also part of a hat trilogy of stories, and each one is delightful.

By Jon Klassen ,

Why should I read it?

7 authors picked I Want My Hat Back as one of their favorite books, and they share why you should read it. This book is for kids age 2, 3, 4, and 5.

What is this book about?

A bear searches for his missing hat in the bestselling, multiple award-winning picture book debut of Jon Klassen.

In his bestselling debut picture book, the multiple award-winning Jon Klassen, illustrator of This Is Not My Hat and Sam and Dave Dig a Hole, tells the story of a bear who's hat has gone. And he wants it back. Patiently and politely, he asks the animals he comes across, one by one, whether they have seen it. Each animal says no (some more elaborately than others). But just as it he begins to lose hope, lying flat on his back in…

I think this is one of Mo Willems’ most seriously underrated books out there.

It’s hilarious yet full of heart. It celebrates choices, individuality, and creative expression. I also love that the characters are all naked mole rats. It’s one of my favorite kinds of picture books, where the adults love it just as much as the kids.

And since it’s Mo Willems’ book, you know the illustrations are unmatched.

This book is filled with the best onomatopoeia words. Zoop! Zup! Zum! Zwit!

I love the exchange between Froggy and his mom that happens a few times in the book as she yells, “Frogggggy!” and he responds back with “Wha-a-a-a-a-t?” So real life. I also love the clever use of parentheses to tell us some side information (“He left his socks on”).

The book checks all the important picture book boxes for me: humorous, relatable, and so worth the repeated readings.

Kim's book list on picture books about clothes (or the lack-thereof!)

Kim Howard Why Kim loves this book

This book is bright and fun and original.

The illustrations are excellent, the story is funny, and maybe best of all, it’s communicating something important without an ounce of preachiness. Jared Chapman makes a genius choice of casually showing how underwear isn’t for babies, thus highlighting every toddler’s dream of wearing underwear and being a big kid.

My personal favorite page is the potato wearing tiny underwear.

By Jared Chapman ,

Why should I read it?

1 author picked Vegetables in Underwear as one of their favorite books, and they share why you should read it. This book is for kids age 2, 3, 4, and 5.

What is this book about?

A bunch of friendly vegetables wear colorful underwear of all varieties big, small, clean, dirty, serious, and funny demonstrating the silliness and necessity of our undies. The unexpectedness of vegetables in their unmentionables is enough to draw giggles, but the pride with which this "big kid" attire is flaunted in front of the baby carrots in diapers will tickle readers of all ages. With art that looks good enough to eat, this deliciously vibrant story will encourage preschoolers to celebrate having left those diapers behind!

Book cover of Meow Said the Cow

Deanie Humphrys-Dunne Author Of My Life at Sweetbrier: A Life Changed by Horses

From my list on encouraging children to believe in themselves.

Why am I passionate about this?

My parents encouraged me to become a children’s author when I was very young. At first, I thought that was the silliest idea ever, but I found creating stories to be fun and inspiring. I’ve been an award-winning published author since 2009, when I had an intuition to try writing stories for children. I love being a role model for children; someone who can show them that they can achieve much more than they imagine if they persevere. My personal story, My Life at Sweetbrier; A Life Changed by Horses, is a testament that remarkable things can be accomplished through perseverance. I’m honored my work has earned many literary awards.

Deanie Humphrys-Dunne Why Deanie loves this book

This book has adorable illustrations and wonderful, amusing rhymes that children and families will want to read again and again. It’s sure to bring smiles to everyone. Not only is it fun, but also educational. At the end of the book, there are engaging riddles with answers listed under them, so children and their families can see how well they remember the information presented in the book. It’s a must-have bedtime story for the little ones, in my opinion.

I adore this story. It first presents silly pictures, like a cow laying eggs, followed by an illustration of a hen and information on the hen and what she does. It’s so funny as well as educational. In addition to the story, there are endearing riddles at the end I feel the book will appeal to toddlers and preschoolers and they will learn a great deal by reading this funny, fact-filled…

Book cover of Is Everyone Ready for Fun?

Sheri Dillard Author Of Cowhide-And-Seek

From my list on picture books for preschool storytimes.

Why am I passionate about this?

I’ve been a preschool teacher for several years, and now I’m a preschool librarian. When I was teaching, storytime was my favorite part of the day, so when I was offered the spot of librarian, I happily took it! I have storytimes in all the classes, which range in age from 1-year-olds up to PreK and kindergarten classes. My favorite moments are when the children are connecting to each other in some way, like sharing a laugh together. Such joy! Ultimately, the best books for preschool storytimes are the ones that a reader is excited to share, with the hope that the kids will love them, too.

Sheri's book list on picture books for preschool storytimes

Sheri Dillard Why Sheri loves this book

I love Jan Thomas’s books! This one starts with three charming cows who are excited to see a red sofa. “Look!” they say. “It’s chicken’s sofa!”

Why are they excited? One page-turn later and PLOP! The cows are all squished together, sitting on the sofa. “Is everyone ready for fun?” they ask.

Turns out, the cows have lots of plans for this sofa. Jumping! Dancing! Wiggling! Poor chicken tries to get them to stop, but these fun-loving cows don’t notice the effect of their “fun” on chicken’s sofa.

I love having the kids act out each scene of jumping, dancing, wiggling, and the final satisfying page. Books that get kids engaged, whether with a catchy refrain or physical actions are fun. (And like those cows, we are ready for fun!)

Why am I passionate about this?

I am a former teacher turned author with a passion for children’s literature. I’ve previously taught English at all levels in schools and specialised in teaching students with learning difficulties.

I’ve also taught literacy skills to disadvantaged children and adult migrants. I firmly believe that learning to read ignites one’s imagination, fills you with knowledge, and opens doors in the real world. My children’s picture book Merrie Moo is a fun story about a friendly and forgetful cow.

Rosie's book list on read aloud shared reading with 3-6 year olds

Rosie Schonell Why Rosie loves this book

I love this book because of its humour in giving cows human characteristics.

Just the thought of cows typing is hilarious in itself. Children love animal characters that act like humans. It is hilarious while also giving relevance to the child’s world. The large illustrations of cows typing add to the humour and fun in the story.

The onomatopoeia words are fun to say aloud, such as "click clack moo." Children love joining in and repeating these words over and over again. Children are entertained by the fact that the cows are smart and trick the farmer.

Book cover of Just Like My Dad

Natasha Wing Author Of The Night Before Father's Day

From my list on fathers and journals for daughters.

Why am I passionate about this?

My father died in 2020 during the pandemic so Father’s Day has taken on a new importance to me as far as reminding people to spend time with the people they love before they are gone. I had started to write a story about my dad and his childhood days before he went to the hospital, and with the help of his friend, was able to complete it for the family to have as a keepsake. I encourage kids to ask questions of their parents and for parents to write down or audio record the stories that they want to pass down. Children’s books and journals are a great way to start the conversation.

Natasha Wing Why Natasha loves this book

This is a sweet generational story about a boy who wants to be just like his cowboy dad. He accompanies his father at the cattle ranch and helps him all day with the horses and cows, and mending fences, until they both return home, “feeling tired and good.” But the best part of the boy’s day is when his dad tucks him in with the assurance that he’ll be a great cowhand, just like his father’s dad. It could be a good conversational starter about modeling for your kids, and asking your children How are you just like your dad?

Marty's book list on to laugh so hard milk shoots out your nose

Marty Kelley Why Marty loves this book

Minnie and Moo are two cows who go on more adventures than any cows in history. Again, the humor works on multiple levels. Adults will laugh out loud over the cows’ realization that they are made of beef while kids will delight in their ridiculous adventures around the farmyard. Or on the moon. Or in Paris. Or even the hot tub. There are several books in the series and each one is absolutely delightful.

Richard Munson Author Of Tech to Table: 25 Innovators Reimagining Food

From my list on the future of food.

Why am I passionate about this?

Innovators long have fascinated me. I helped launch a clean-energy startup and advance legislation promoting environmental entrepreneurs. I’ve written biographies of Nikola Tesla (who gave us electric motors, radio, and remote controls) Jacques Cousteau (inventor of the Aqua Lung and master of undersea filming) and George Fabyan (pioneer of modern cryptography and acoustics), as well as a history of electricity (From Edison to Enron). I love reading (and writing) about ingenious and industrious individuals striving to achieve their dreams.

Richard Munson Why Richard loves this book

When it comes to discussions about meat, wouldn’t you like something balanced rather than strident? Denis and Gail Hayes offer a well-researched and well-written look at the role of cows in our history and diets. The book’s appeal is that it is both too radical for most cowboys (except the couple hundred ranchers actually doing it right) and too honest about the important role animal protein played in human evolution for the vegans. Cowed also delivers an array of quotable facts, such as “Eating a pound of beef has a greater climate impact than burning a gallon of gasoline.”

Why should I read it?

1 author picked Cowed as one of their favorite books, and they share why you should read it.

What is this book about?

In Cowed, globally recognized environmentalists Denis and Gail Boyer Hayes offer a revealing analysis of how our beneficial, centuries-old relationship with bovines has evolved into one that now endangers us.

Long ago, cows provided food and labor to settlers taming the wild frontier and helped the loggers, ranchers, and farmers who shaped the country's landscape. Our society is built on the backs of bovines who indelibly stamped our culture, politics, and economics. But our national herd has doubled in size over the past hundred years to 93 million, with devastating consequences for the country's soil and water. Our love affair…
