Such a fun, engaging read, I was never bored, and especially the first half was so addictive, I just gobbled it up! Set exclusively at an isolated reality TV compound, this is really a story about the characters and their dynamics. The competition element of the show created the high stakes that always kept the tension and kept the story evolving, and changing the interpersonal dynamics as more and more people leave the compound. Characters, writing, and plot were all on point for me 👌.

Unknown Author Why Y loves this book

At the beginning of the novel, I wasn't sure these characters were people I could relate to, super rich and each with faults, some more severe than others, but soon I cared about each one of these women and didn't want to put the book down. I have never annotated a book, but for this one I really mourned having a library copy and not being able to write in it; some observations and thoughts on the page were just perfect. Elizabeth story also really got me, such a complicated character, but her arc broke my heart, stomped around on it for a bit, and then duct-taped it back together.

(There are a lot of mentions of body image and thin culture, proceed with caution if you're struggling with it.)

The women of the Valiat family are in crisis. Elizabeth, the regal matriarch, remained in Tehran despite the revolution and only has Niaz, her Islamic law–breaking granddaughter for company. In America, Elizabeth's daughters, the flamboyantly high-flying Shirin and frustrated housewife Seema, are wondering if their new…

Leanne Lieberman Author Of Cleaning Up

From my list on YA that adults will love too.

Why am I passionate about this?

Like many adults, I love a good YA story. YA books take us back to our younger days when we were stronger, faster, and likely better-looking, but also to the confusing transitional time of being a teenager. Mostly, I love reading and writing YA novels because despite being about hard topics–friendship, disease, toppling the patriarchy–they are hopeful. In this confusing, stressful world, we need a little optimism. With that in mind, I offer you five of my favorite YA books that I think adults will love, too.

Leanne Lieberman Why Leanne loves this book

Although I love a book that takes you traveling to the past or to foreign lands, sometimes I want to jump into the shoes of a contemporary character and understand their world. This book does just that.

Starr Carter is a black teenager who lives in a poor, predominantly black neighborhood but attends an elite, mostly white private school. Starr manages to code-switch between her two lives until her childhood friend is shot by the police.

If you like books about social justice and characters who stand up for what they believe, this is a fantastic read.

At first I thought, oh, another dystopian story of the end of the world. But quickly it became thought-provoking and real, a saga of the near-future results of climate change. The hurricanes and flooding don't just send Florida back 500 yrs but worse: back to the swamps. Civilization is destroyed as most people evacuate or stubbornly try to hang onto the life they've always had. One young girl learns to survive, and her next generations hear legends of how people used to live in boxes on dry land and drink water out of pipes, and they wonder how such things could ever have existed. A searing yet hopeful look at one possible future result arising from our glut of technology now. pub 2022

Time travel AND Greek mythology? Yes and PLEASE! The quirky main character-narrator's tone is reminiscent of Rosie (The Rosie Project), which I also loved. Named for Cassandra of Greek myth (the goddess who could foretell the future but nobody believed her), this Cassandra sees the world in colors, yet at the same time, in "black and white" as her autism manifests. She first time travels by accident on a terrible day in her life, and once she figures out what has happened, she tries to fix everything - and fails over and over again. But not in a Groundhog's Day ripoff kind of way, because details are different each time, and she doesn't have the luxury of changing everything or everyone around her just by learning from past mistakes.

I rooted hard for Cassandra to fix her life, but then, like Cassandra herself, I started rooting for something else -…
