Sci-fi has been part of my life since Sunday afternoons in front of the radio listening to Journey to the Moon and the original Quatermass serial. Then it was Doctor Who and Star Trek. Despite this, I have never written a serious sci-fi book until now, but I can boast of knowing all the characters in both the radio and TV sci-fi shows. I guess I can admit to being a Trekkie.
I love Arthur C. Clarke’s work. A fantastic story about artificial intelligence and how man can be manipulated by it.
What amazed me was how a computer named HAL could disobey a human command. The film version of 2001 was made with both director Kubrick and Clarke involved. The original idea came from a short story written by Clarke, titled "Sentinel."
To me, this partnership worked well, but it is an unusual project that produced an iconic book and movie at the same time. Like all of Clarke's works, it is a book to keep on the shelf so it can be read whenever you need to experience sci-fi at its best.

goal this year was to commit to longer books. So, I read A Game of Thrones by
George R.R. Martin. It was not too long, but it was too dry. A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, however, is Martin’s saving grace - it’s light, relatable, humorous, fun, and atmospheric.
What makes it so
great is that it hones in on the story of just two characters whom you get to
know intimately: Dunk, a failing hedge knight, and Egg, a royal in
disguise.
Martin
constructs a narrative of blind optimism in the face of constant failure for
Dunk, which is something I strongly identified with. Almost everything I’ve
done as a creative has failed, yet I keep pushing forward – nothing will stop
me. Seeing this attitude in a book character compelled me to keep reading.

This may seem an odd choice, but as a maths popularizer I need to know all that I can about why some people find the main elements of the subject so difficult. I found Doug French's book exceptionally helpful in this respect, even though it is aimed principally at high school teachers. This is partly because he focuses throughout on the most important mathematical ideas and difficulties. Moreover, the scope is wider than the title suggests, for he also ventures imaginatively into both geometry and calculus.

One way of enlivening any presentation of mathematics is by including some history of the subject, but this only really works if there is some serious scholarship behind it. I especially like Hollingdale's book, partly because of the concise writing style, and partly because of the unusually good balance between history and mathematics itself. The calculus, in all its various forms, with some aspects going right back to the Ancient Greeks, is treated especially well.

This book has haunted me for years. For what is it, exactly, that gives it such enduring popularity? After all, it was first published in 1936, yet is still in print today. In his autobiography, Hogben remarks on the importance of eye-catching illustrations but speculates that its success may instead be because the book contains – most unusually for a 'popular' work – exercises and answers, making it more suitable for self-teaching.
