Book cover of Love Is Letting Go of Fear

Ann Marie Hoff Author Of Flourish from Within

From my list on changing your life spiritually.

Why am I passionate about this?

I am an intuitive medium, artist, and animal communicator who has channelled for 30 years. I started by talking to dead people and pets, then expanded to talking to angels and guides, too. These are the books that kept me from losing my mind when I was transitioning from a "normal" scientific human (I was an executive-level pharma salesperson with an MS in Immunology) to a "woo-woo" who believes you can heal people with words and beliefs. I change lives being a channel, and you can't put the genie back in the bottle. These books allowed me to understand my new reality. They also made me believe in a world of love, forgiveness, and learning.

Ann Marie Hoff Why Ann loves this book

In my thirties, I had just come out of a long-term relationship and was on a blind date. We were talking about love, and I said, “What even love anyway?”; to which my date replied: “Love is letting go of fear.” He told me I had to read this book.

I have reread this book numerous times. It is a manual for leading a life of authentic integrity. I used to think of it as the Cliffs Notes for A Course in Miracles (a book I bought 30 years ago and have yet to read). Because, why? Everything you need to know is in this book!

The gist is this: there are only two prime emotions, love and fear. All other emotions are derivatives of those two emotions. We also have a choice, the choice for love.

Why should I read it?

2 authors picked Love Is Letting Go of Fear as one of their favorite books, and they share why you should read it.

What is this book about?

After more than thirty years, Love Is Letting of Fear continues to be among the most widely read and best-loved classics on personal transformation. Both helpful and hopeful, this little gem of a guide offers twelve lessons to help us let go of the past and stay focused on the present as we step confidently toward the future.

Renowned all over the world as the founder of Attitudinal Healing, Dr. Gerald Jampolsky reminds us that the impediments to the life we long for are nothing more than the limitations imposed on us by our own minds. Revealing our true selves,…

Ann's book list on changing your life spiritually

Ann Marie Hoff Why Ann loves this book

This is the first book I read that wasn’t a scientific metaphysical book. A turning point for me, the book is my Bible.

I have read and reread it. The information is profound, simple, loving, fearless, and quite comforting. It explains that we always have a choice, and that the Universe has our back.

Many Emmanuel quotes help in complicated times. “You are not a beggar at the table of life, you are the honored guest.” That statement just makes me want to square my shoulders, put my head up, and smile at the wonder of life. I see more joy in the world because I read Emmanuel. I channeled him once, and he is true wisdom.

I challenge you to read this book and NOT feel safer in this world!

When I started channeling, I was overwhelmed.

I had talked to Pat Roderquest, and she said that the Pathwork information saved her and gave her guidance. She didn’t give me the whole name; she just said, “Pathwork.” I looked for this book for 2 damn years. Everywhere. Then, at a used bookstore, the angels would leave me a stack of books on the corner of the check-out counter. To my delight, The Pathwork to Self-Transformation was there!

This book isn’t an “easy” read. I have worked with it for over 20 years. In the beginning, I could hardly register the information. Now, I can comprehend most of it. This is channeled material. I would recommend this over A Course in Miracles. If there is a concept in the book I don’t understand, I just sit with it awhile until something shifts and I see it.

Mr. Emoto proved that water also has consciousness.

He exposed water to music, then took pictures of the resulting crystals it formed. The beautiful music would form gorgeous crystals, and then words like retarded or hopeless would form distorted crystals. This is proof that sounds with emotional charges affect how water holds the consciousness of the vibration.

He suggests that intention and language may influence human well-being, given the body’s 80% water. Blending experimental results with spiritual themes, the book emphasizes interconnectedness, personal responsibility, and collective consciousness. If you want a better life, tell your cells!

I heard Emoto speak excitedly about raising the vibration of the planet by using positive words with water. He talked about crossing earthbound spirits so they wouldn’t drag the vibration of the planet down, something I had been working on for a few years. A delightful author with an incredible gift to the world!

He shows how we can apply its wisdom to our own lives, and how, by learning to respect and appreciate water, we can better…

Book cover of A Hat for House

Emily Raij Author Of Just Say Welcome!

From my list on neighbors helping neighbors.

Why am I passionate about this?

I think a lot about being welcoming, especially in regard to caring for our neighbors and teaching our children that we are all responsible for each other. Picture books are a wonderful way to teach those lessons and show concrete actions we can take. Books are windows to look into the lives of others with empathy and curiosity. I am a children’s author, but I am also a mom trying to raise caring kids and a neighbor trying to serve my community through the Little Free Pantry and Little Free Library I steward. Hosting a refugee family in my home was another way I could show compassion and fight against hate.

Emily's book list on neighbors helping neighbors

Emily Raij Why Emily loves this book

I love how this sweet book shows neighbors coming together to help in even the most stressful of times.

Not only do the different neighbors—from trees to animals to people—help the house find a new “hat” (roof) during a storm, they all weather that storm together, and the house finds ways to help his neighbors too.

Kids learn that they can get through tough times with the help of friends. The warm illustrations also convey the range of emotions experienced in the book and show that it is OK to have all those feelings. I also love that the author’s motivation for writing this story was her experience of leaning on friends and family during her cancer treatment.

Why should I read it?

1 author picked A Hat for House as one of their favorite books, and they share why you should read it. This book is for kids age 3, 4, 5, and 6.

What is this book about?

An uplifting picture book debut about community and hope after a damaging storm.

One windy day, House's hat blows clean off his head!

His friends are happy to help, but nothing they try seems quite right. Then the wind gets even stronger and thunder rumbles, making House wonder how he can keep his family safe and if he'll ever feel quite like himself again.

But just in time, more neighbors come to pitch in. And they have a plan for a new hat that fits him perfectly.

Sweetly illustrated and studded with humor, this tale of community is perfect for…

Book cover of The Care Manifesto: The Politics of Interdependence

Nancy Folbre Author Of The Rise and Decline of Patriarchal Systems

From my list on feminist political economy.

Why am I passionate about this?

I grew up in a family exposed to great contrasts of poverty and wealth, in which women were always the ones expected to ‘make nice.” I’ve long been fascinated by the parallels among unfair inequalities based on gender, sexuality, age, race, ethnicity, citizenship, and class, and the ways in which these inequalities are disguised, justified, or just plain ignored. This fascination has driven my successful and very lucky career as a socialist feminist economist and public intellectual.

Nancy's book list on feminist political economy

Nancy Folbre Why Nancy loves this book

You may not agree with everything in this book (I don’t) but its extraordinarily compelling critique of profit worship built on utter disregard for the well-being of others illustrates powerful synergies between patriarchal and capitalist norms. At the same time, the care collective offers powerful examples of the ways in which people sometimes rally quite effectively around principles of mutual aid.

By The Care Collective , Andreas Chatzidakis , Jamie Hakim , Catherine Rottenberg

Why should I read it?

1 author picked The Care Manifesto as one of their favorite books, and they share why you should read it.

What is this book about?

The Care Manifesto puts care at the heart of the debates of our current crisis: from intimate care-childcare, healthcare, elder care-to care for the natural world. We live in a world where carelessness reigns, but it does not have to be this way.

The Care Manifesto puts forth a vision for a truly caring world. The authors want to reimagine the role of care in our everyday lives, making it the organising principle in every dimension and at every scale of life. We are all dependent on each other, and only by nurturing these interdependencies can we cultivate a world…

Book cover of The Bear's Toothache

Rebecca Hazell Author Of The Sweeper: A Buddhist Tale

From my list on to cheer you up and get you to look around.

Why am I passionate about this?

I grew up in suburbia—or urban sprawl—with fairytales and children’s nonfiction series like Lands and Peoples. My passion for reading (and history and art museums) nurtured my sense of wonder and awe at the richness of the world. I was inspired to write nonfiction about heroic people by my own children, whose social studies education lacked dazzle and examples of heroism. I had already been creating educational materials for schools, but I wanted to inspire their wonder about and appreciation of the world. My kids are grown, but I’m still writing for young readers. An avid world traveler and historian, I've always aspired to bring other people, places, cultures, and times to life.

Rebecca's book list on to cheer you up and get you to look around

Rebecca Hazell Why Rebecca loves this book

I love this book for its wacky humor, its kindness, and its great illustrations.

The sleepy dad’s hair sticking up always makes me smile. Not to mention the bear trying to hide under the bed, which is smaller than he is. And I love its gentle sympathy for the clumsily helpful child and the suffering and then grateful bear.

Book cover of Up and Adam

Norene Paulson Author Of What's Silly Hair Day with No Hair?

From my list on children’s picture books on inclusion.

Why am I passionate about this?

As a former middle school language arts teacher, I’ve witnessed firsthand the struggles some students face trying to be accepted and the heartbreak they experience when they are not. Every child deserves to be seen and appreciated for who they are and not be excluded or ostracized due to factors over which they have little control. I write and promote picture books about friendship, acceptance, and inclusion because everyone deserves to be included…always.

Norene's book list on children’s picture books on inclusion

Norene Paulson Why Norene loves this book

This is a wonderful story whose main character has Down’s Syndrome, but it’s not a book about a child with Down’s Syndrome. The focus instead is on Adam’s kindness, his helpfulness, his positive attitude, and his community’s willingness to value him as a respected member. I absolutely love the sense of community inclusion found in this story.

Book cover of Good Guys: How Men Can Be Better Allies for Women in the Workplace

Karen Catlin Author Of Better Allies: Everyday Actions to Create Inclusive, Engaging Workplaces

From my list on be a better ally at work starting today.

Why am I passionate about this?

After spending 25 years building software products and serving as a vice president of engineering at Adobe, I witnessed a sharp decline in the number of women working in tech. Frustrated but galvanized, I knew it was time to switch gears and focus on creating more inclusive workplaces where women and others who are marginalized can thrive. I naively set off to change workplaces around the world! My first step was starting the Twitter handle @BetterAllies to share simple, actionable steps to be more inclusive. That handle became the inspiration for my four books and my popular 5 Ally Actions newsletter, which I send to over 40,000 subscribers every Friday.

Karen's book list on be a better ally at work starting today

Karen Catlin Why Karen loves this book

In this comprehensive round-up of best practices for how men can be allies for women in the workplace, Smith and Johnson share anecdotal stories, research, and realistic, practical actions. While their book focuses on encouraging men to get involved with creating more gender equality at work, I have found it to be an indispensable guide as a woman learning to be a better ally for others who are underestimated, overlooked, and marginalized.

The authors don’t hold back. They pack a punch with each topic, educating and expecting us all to do better. And with their concrete recommendations, we have no excuses not to.

I love their advice, and I bet you will, too.

By David G. Smith , W. Brad Johnson ,

Why should I read it?

1 author picked Good Guys as one of their favorite books, and they share why you should read it.

What is this book about?

The key to advancing gender equality? Men.

Women are at a disadvantage. At home, they often face an unequal division of household chores and childcare, and in the workplace, they deal with lower pay, lack of credit for their contributions, roadblocks to promotion, sexual harassment, and more. And while organizations are looking to address these issues, too many gender-inclusion initiatives focus on how women themselves should respond, reinforcing the perception that these are "women's issues" and that men&#8212often the most influential stakeholders in an organization&#8212don't need to be involved.

Gender-in-the-workplace experts David G. Smith and W. Brad Johnson counter this…

Book cover of The Farmer

Phyllis Root Author Of Anywhere Farm

From my list on growing things.

Why am I passionate about this?

I write children’s books, both fiction and non-fiction, including One Duck Stuck, Big Momma Makes the World, Rattletrap Car, Plant a Pocket of Prairie, and, in collaboration with Jacqueline Briggs Martin and Liza Ketchum, Begin With A Bee, a picture book about the federally endangered rusty-patched bumblebee. Recently I have been putting my garden to bed for the winter, pulling tomato vines, harvesting beans that have dried on the vine, cutting herbs, and planting cloves of garlic to grow into heads in next year’s garden. In a couple of months snow will bury the garden beds, and the only gardens will be in the pages of books. Here are five of the children’s books that I love about growing things.

Phyllis' book list on growing things

First published in French and illustrated with wonderfully vivid art, this is a story of a farmer who works hard mowing, raking, digging, watering in his fields. He rejoices when things begin to grow, but a drought threatens all his hard work. The farmer is not alone, though, in his efforts, and the art shows the farm animals helping, followed by rain falling and bringing his fields to colorful and joyful abundance. Hard work matters, and so do friends.
