Books like Dance of the Goblins — picked by fans

I’m ending with this unorthodox double feature (think Godzilla v. Kong) because girls who kill put a twist on the theme of this list. What are little girls made of? Sugar and spice and everything nice. But maybe they’re a little less nice when boys are boys.

A feminist reimagining of March’s classic 1950s novel has Claude Daigle perhaps deserving of his fate at Rhoda Penmark’s hands. What if he tormented and taunted her, and she took revenge? While the daughter in Stage’s contemporary novel walks a very narrow line that kept me unsure the whole time… the guessing was delicious. Is Hanna evil? Or misunderstood? Is her mom, Suzette, going to get her due? Or is she going insane? 

This is a werewolf story with teeth.

For people who like traditional scary werewolves and a well written, believable community structure and strong plot and characters, this one is top of the class. There are characters to love, characters to hate and no punches pulled on who might get slaughtered.

The best part is that you still want to see the werewolves win.

This Dark Fantasy story about gods of the sea interacting with souls of the dead has everything a good sea monster story has to offer and more.

A ship captain, who is also a god, tries to rescue the souls of drowned sailors before his sister sends her creatures to eat them, losing their souls to the world forever.

Fedor insists they are thieves, not assassins, but his mentor and a ravenglass dagger say otherwise.

This is a fascinating Dark Fantasy series with magical weapons and wyverns with personality and dark secrets, not least of all their association with the Assassins Guild. Two unlikely anti-heroes get deeper and deeper into trouble with protection gangs, a totally insane assassin who chooses Fedor to replace himself, and a brutal world where danger lurks behind every choice.

This is a 360-page, lushly detailed, fictional narrative about a ragtag collective of kidnapped humans struggling to survive the magical, capricious influence of the fae; technically, it is not a book; it’s a rulebook for my favorite dice-playing game.

Every aspect within the book, from the short stories about its goblin markets to its essays on emotion-based magic, ultimately sets up pieces of a world that confronts its themes of ‘what is humanity’ with reader participation. My partner and I roleplayed conflicts in a bar-themed after the book’s Spring Court.

I rolled dice with other fans online and argued over the results. I commissioned art of characters I’d based on the fae. Its intimate, interconnected stories deliberately blur the line between a book series and a game series, and in this, it makes being human feel magical.

When a hardworking goblin gets a frivolous unicorn for a neighbor, it’s easy to understand why he’s a bit put out. After all, he knows many useful magical skills, like turning socks into slugs and making (broccoli-flavored) ice cream out of broccoli. So where are the kids begging for goblin-themed birthday parties, huh? What makes unicorns so special? Great for anyone who’s ever felt overlooked or a little jealous of the popular kids.

This book has had a profound impact on me, as a child reader, as an artist, and as a parent. (It was initially published in 1978 and was reissued more recently.) The images are stunning. Each spread is a sweeping perspective of a surreal, Edenic valley. When I first read the book as a kid in the 1980s, I was transfixed. It’s a thriller! In a tension-filled operation, seven goblins are trying to steal the colors of the rainbow.

When I read the book now, I see the story as a parable about resource exploitation and environmental stewardship. The Rainbow Goblins (I won’t spoil the ending, but it is spectacular) has nestled its way into my brain and has become a touchstone for me in thinking about the most effective ways to tell a story.

Life Reset follows a once-dominant player of the game NEO named Oren who is betrayed by his guildmates and ends up trapped as a goblin NPC within the game. This setup allows the story to focus on unique, goblin-specific abilities.

However, what I found most interesting about this book was its emphasis on an almost real-time strategy system of constructing and upgrading various buildings to manage his goblin tribe. While that wasn’t something I drew upon too heavily for my own story, I did love Oren’s frequent creative problem-solving, as well as the ways he tried to bend or even break the game’s systems to his advantage.

I personally feel that stories like this work best when the protagonist has limited options but the freedom to apply those options in a variety of surprising ways.

This is the most Terry Pratchett-y book I’ve come across that wasn’t written by Terry Pratchett! It’s often hilarious, but also hides a deeper commentary on war, selfishness, and human nature. This is a short, quick read, but well-told and engaging—once I started, I couldn’t put it down until I finished it.

T. Kingfisher writes in a number of different styles, and this is the funniest of her books that I’ve read, just beating Swordheart.

I loved this book because it is both captivating and well written with different worlds and forbidden romance. This story is based not only on enemies who become lovers but also has sizzling tension and an epic dark mystery element, all beautifully written and combined. 

This book immediately pulled me into the author's world. The tension inside was just as unique as the storyline itself. There is nothing quite like reading a book that has you on the edge of your seat but melting your heart at the same time; definitely, a surprising and unique twist combining many elements.
