Books like Album of Horses — picked by fans

This was the first book I ever pulled from the big kids’ shelves at our library. I read it in the big chair in the den until Mother chased me outside with dire threats that I was ruining my eyes. 

Then I read among straw bales and a heap of yard cats until nightfall lured the cats away. Then I read in bed until Mother threatened further direness if I didn’t turn off my light. Then I read by moonlight until I fell asleep and woke again the next day to read more.

A shipwreck, an island, and a horse. A little barn in the suburbs. These were the opposite of my world. During the hours I spent with this book, I became an escape reader.

Although I enjoy reading fiction the most, this true story, Pinto, intrigued me because the “star” of the show is a horse. Set in 1912, four men, called the "Overland Westerners," decided fame and fortune awaited them as they embarked on the longest horseback ride in history. Their goal was to visit all 48 state capitals in 3 years and complete their journey at the San Francisco World's Fair on June 1, 1915. Facing rugged roads, raging rivers, thieves, and near starvation, the men went through 17 horses. Only one horse completed the entire journey... Pinto, a little horse with a heart as big as the sky! The page-turning book describes Pinto's account of his dangerous adventure. 

As an author ready to write my own horse book series with a Christian message many years ago, I gleaned much from reading some of Dandi Daley Mackall’s Horse Gentler series. This first one impressed me the most because it portrays the main character, twelve-year-old Winnie Willis, close to the age of Skye Nicholson, the main character in my own series. As Winnie teaches her horses about unconditional love and blind trust, God shows Winnie that he can be trusted too. The book is good, safe reading for tween and teen horse lovers. 

I am far from being a young adult, but I still found this charming book enlightening. The protagonist is a young woman who disguises herself as a man so she may join the equestrian military force patrolling the West Coast to spot submarines offshore.

The story also touches on the very sad fact that Japanese people were rounded up, deprived of their property, and confined in camps in California during WWII.

This book is a novel by Marguerite Henry, based on the true story of the Godolphin Arabian, one of the founding stallions of the Thoroughbred breed. The story follows the journey of Sham, an Arabian horse, and his caretaker Agba, from the stables of the Sultan of Morocco to the streets of London. Agba remains loyal to Sham through many trials and tribulations until his true value is recognized.

I grew up on a horse farm, have ridden horses since I was a little girl, and spent many years training and competing dressage horses. People become equestrians because of the special connection that a horse can have with a human. Sham’s and Agba’s story is about this special, transcendent love. This book has remained one of my favorites in part because I found my own “Sham.”

A literary mystery featuring Arthur Conan Doyle, creator of Sherlock Holmes, in a real case in which he proved an accused man innocent.

The trial was in 1903, but the novel exposes the legacy of Victorian colonialism with supreme skill. It unfolds against a society divided by racial and class prejudice. George Edalji, born to a Parsee father and an Irish mother, was imprisoned for the brutal mutilations of farm animals that took place in Wyrley.

I loved the portrayal of the two protagonists. Arthur is convinced of George’s innocence and dedicates himself to his cause.  George is particularly moving, maintaining his integrity and dignity throughout. The investigation explores the lives of these two very different men while ultimately celebrating their courage and generosity.

Horses are central to human history, but they have a history of their own. Budiansky explores equine history using biological science, animal behavior, and evolutionary history. How did horses evolve? How did horses and humans come together to co-evolve? Why do horses and humans get along so well? What are horses like? How do horses do what they do? After setting horses in historical context Budiansky takes up issues of communication, social behaviors, intelligence, the senses, the mechanics of movement, and the production of power and speed. This book shows that horses are not magical or mystical creatures, but serious fellow beings who have co-evolved with us through biology and history.

I first discovered this wonderful story decades ago in my youth, when I read everything I could find with a horse in it. Many years later, following a catastrophic riding accident, I found this book tucked away on a backroom shelf. I immediately recalled that Judy’s struggle was precisely the one I was then facing, and I spent the afternoon re-reading her story. There may be something enduringly healing about the stories we love in childhood, because the power of Anderson’s story helped me recover my confidence with my horses. An added bonus of Anderson’s books are his masterful sketches which capture the essence of the horses at the center of his stories, and Afraid to Ride includes some of my all-time favorites.

This Way, Charlie is a beautiful book based on the true story of an unlikely friendship between a partially blind horse and a very grumpy and stubborn goat at a wildlife rehabilitation farm. The gentle text tells their story and shows how a little help from a friend can help overcome all kinds of obstacles, physical or mental. The illustrations are beautifully designed and executed in a soft impressionistic way that is almost dreamlike. Resulting in a heartwarming book that celebrates the kindness, compassion, trust, and strength of a friendship.

Some books stay with you for a lifetime. Such is the case with Black Beauty for me.

This historical fiction novel (although it wasn’t “Historical” when it was written!”) is considered a classic because of its staying power and message. Anna Sewell’s work inspired the creation of the ASPCA because of the depictions of animal cruelty in the book.

Now, half a century later, it has inspired me to not only write historical fiction horse stories but I also chose to write in first person from the horse’s point of view the way Black Beauty is written.
