I read a lot of fiction, both out of love and as my job. One of my biggest frustrations is that it’s so hard to find novels that are both thought-provoking and fun to read. Books that are page-turners often leave me feeling icky, like I’ve mowed down a big, greasy mess of french fries, and I have regrets. Books that are intellectually stimulating are like a bowl of kale that I nibble at and find easy to put down. When I find a novel that is both propulsive and thoughtful, that is my holy grail, and all of the books on this list hit that sweet spot for me.
This book is an intensely philosophical novel that tackles big subjects, like the nature of love, the limits and desirability of freedom, the expression of sexuality, and the very nature of human existence, while at the same time being immersive and easy to read. The main characters, Tomas and Tereza, are full of love for each other but fail to truly connect because of their personal frailties, which I believe is true of all of us at one time or another.

Erotic literature has always fascinated me as a great transgressor of social conventions. I read the Marquis de Sade when I was young, followed by Henry Miller and the extraordinary Venus in Furs. These are works of astonishing literary scope that explore human nature as few others do. Then I discovered Bataille, and the fascination became too profound to ignore for a restless writer determined to explore human nature. When I read Lolita, I understood that eroticism wasn't merely a perfect thread for a narrative, but could become the very essence of great literary storytelling. For me, continuing that exploration through dark romance is simply a natural extension of who I am as a writer.
I understand its enormous success and admire H. D. Carlton’s ability to take obsession, danger, and attraction into territory few novels dare to explore. I also found it fascinating because it showed me how far dark romance could be taken and, above all, how far millions of readers were willing to follow it.
As a writer, it influenced me as a model, but also by contrast, because I believe that obsession and desire, to feel genuine and authentic, must be accompanied by psychology and character development that make the attraction believable.
I’m always inspired by nature. I’m sure that’s because my parents always took us to beautiful places on our summer vacations. I enjoyed snorkeling in Florida, hiking in the Rockies, exploring at Yellowstone National Park, to name a few places. I love the details the author writes of this amazing national park that begins in Natchez, Mississippi, supposedly follows a Native American trail, and then ends in Nashville, Tennessee. What a great setting for a novel, especially when you factor in that drug traffickers are using this trail. In truth, they’re using our national parks because no one lives in the parks.
