Shepherd is a community of authors and super-readers sharing their favorite books with the world.
Iâm a cozy mystery writer and reader who loves to suss out family dynamics in the books Iâm devouring. My love of genealogy and turning family stories into fiction played a large role while writing my first book, Hammers and Homicide. Wherever my husband and I travel, we search for ancestors in ancient cemeteries and try to find out more about their stories. Youâll find a few of them between the pages of my books. I hope youâll enjoy these books, all featuring some level of family ties, as much as I did!
In this book by Jennifer J. Chow, I loved how the differences between Yale Yee, the sleuth, and her cousin, Celine, not only created tension throughout the book but ultimately played on each of their strengths to solve the mystery.Â
The two cousins are thrown together when quiet Yale is tapped by her dad to run the family bubble tea stand at L.A.âs night market. Loud and flamboyant Celine, a social media influencer, arrives in L.A. and gets tasked with helping Yale out.
Chow does a great job of showing the two girls' very different personalities and adding in that family tension. On top of that, the L.A. night market is fascinating! I hope this will be a long-running series! Â
Two cousins who start a food stall at their local night market get a serving of murder in this first novel of a delicious new cozy mystery series by Jennifer J. Chow, bestselling author of Mimi Lee Gets a Clue.
When Yale Yee discovers her cousin Celine is visiting from Hong Kong, she is obliged to play tour guide to a relative she hasnât seen in twenty years. Not only that, but her father thinks itâs a wonderful idea for them to bond by running a food stall together at the Eastwood Village Night Market. Yale hasnât cooked in years,âŚ
From the beginning of my writing journey in 2000, all my girls have been full of spunk and sass and fighting every day to figure out life in the present while also dealing with the past, all while solving murders and mysteries and navigating relationships; oh my! The books I chose are all about that sass and spunk, those main characters in The Cozies (or RomCozies as I call mine since they have both murder and a budding romance) that not only make you snicker in the right places but also sigh when theyâre over, you close the book, and hold it to your heart hoping the next is coming soon.Â
This book by Kimberley OâMalley has Addie as one of my favorite characters! With her spunk and her sass, she gets the job done, even when the journey is seriously rough!
I love the premise and the pets in this one as much as I love Addie. Make sure youâre prepared to be unable to put it down as we run from one thing to the next to a satisfying conclusion that I did not see coming because my eyes were squinted in laughter!
Something old, something new, something borrowed⌠Something evil? What should be the happiest day of Addie Fosterâs life draws near. But so does her stalker. As the danger looms ever closer, her prophetic nightmares become more frightening. Who has Addie in their sights? Will she figure it out in time? Will she get to marry Jonah in the wedding of her dreams? Will Grey catch the bouquet?

I mean, who doesnât love a book with the tagline: When she gets pushed too far, even her hot flashes won't hold her back? If you like women of a certain age, you will be highly entertained by Tootsie and her entourage. They get into some of the hottest water and hilarious situations.
I love the way the community is building and the things the author chooses to highlight to make these books very hard to get away from until after youâre done and gone.
When her elderly friends lose their jobs in a shady business deal, feisty fifty-year-old Tootsie Goldberg decides it's never too late to speak up.
Tootsie Goldberg was never one to rock the boat. Witnessing tragedy after a seemingly harmless protest taught the Jersey native to keep her mouth shut, even when she's fuming. But when her elderly coworkers lose their radio station jobs due to a shady business deal, this feisty fifty-year-old decides it's never too late to use her smart mouth for something other than talking in circles.
Standing up for her friends lights a fire in her toâŚ

First up is Julia Ann Lindseyâs Bonnie and Clyde series. The laughs, the hijinks, the relationships, and the solved murders. Itâs all a recipe for me to be pulled right into this series and away from anything Iâm actually supposed to be doing.
I love the setting, the charm, and the way that the author gives us such a view right into the living room of Bonnie and her cat Clyde, so I want to go see if sheâs available for a quick dinner! After she finds the killer, of course.
Bonnieâs embracing the big 4-0 and all it has to offer, including a celebratory night out with friends. The evening is a perfect blend of fun and fabulous, until the local love guru, Gretchen, is confronted by a clientâs spouse, whoâs displeased by a prediction of new romance in his wifeâs future. Gretchen excuses herself to sort the situation, but in the morning, the man is dead. Stabbed with a cake knife from her True Love collection.

Donna Andrews is next with her delightful Meg Langslow Mysteries. My book was the first book I read in this series, and then I had to go back and start from the beginning and wait (im)patiently between each release for the next one.
I love how Meg handles things and how she puts the pieces together. I often finish the books in this series and think, âI could have figured it out if I hadnât been snickering so much!âÂ
Poor Meg Langslow. Sheâs blessed in so many ways. Michael, her boyfriend, is a handsome, delightful heartthrob who adores her. Sheâs a successful blacksmith, known for her artistic wrought-iron creations. But somehow Megâs road to contentment is more rutted and filled with potholes than seems fair.
There are Michaelâs and Megâs doting but demanding mothers, for a start. And then thereâs the fruitless hunt for a place big enough for the couple to live together. And a succession of crises brought on by the well-meaning but utterly wacky demands of her friends and family. Demands that Meg has a hardâŚ

I adored Sarah E. Burr's book. Hazel and her Aunt Poppy each have their own magical âwhimâ that has been passed down in their bloodline.Â
The characters are perfectly quirky, the setting is quaint, and the mystery has enough twists and turns to leave me satisfied. I loved that the book started out with Hazel and Poppy, but by the end, the family had grown. So, I wonât spoil anything; Iâm not going to say more about that! It was a fantastic read, and Iâll be gobbling down the rest of the series.Â

This book gives me everything I want in a cozy mysteryâChristmas, a snowy Montana village, killer chocolates, a mystery bookstore, and a protagonist with an identical twin sister! What more could you want?
I love the dynamics between twin sisters Hanna and Alex as they juggle duties in Murder and Mayhem, the book and chocolate shop they own together. Romeril delivers humor and the quirkiness of small-town life like a pro. I loved all the twists and turns that kept me guessing to the sweet end!Â

Every time a new Irish Village Mystery by Carlene OâConnor comes out, Iâm first in line at the bookstore.
I love Garda Siobhan OâSullivan and her siblings, whom she fondly refers to as the OâSullivan Six. In this book, the ninth in the series, I was delighted to revisit the village of Kilbane in County Cork as Siobhan and her swoon-worthy husband, Garda Macdera Flannery, follow the clues to catch a murderer who took out one of the contestants of a televised baking show.
The humor in this series always leaves me laughing out loud and ready for another visit with the OâSullivans. Â
Hailed as âqueen of the cozy police proceduralâ (Publishers Weekly), USA Today bestselling author Carlene OâConnor returns to County Cork in Irelandâs lush countryside, where locals are simmering with excitement over the reality TV baking contest coming to town âuntil someone serves up a show-stopping murder that only Garda Siobhan OâSullivan can solve.
âDistinctive, captivating characters match a gripping plot full of surprises. OâConnor reinforces her place among the top rank of cozy writers.â âPublishers Weekly STARRED REVIEW
In Kilbane, opinions are plentiful and rarely in alignment. But thereâs one thing everyone does agree onâthe bakery in the old flourâŚ
Iâm a foodie at heart and grew up working in a family restaurant. I currently live in Los Angeles, where Iâm delighted to have access to all sorts of edible goodies. As a writer, I insert food into my books, specifically in my culinary cozy mysteries, which have murderâand recipes! I also adore the idea of the fantastical; as a kid, I often created entire imaginary worlds during playtime. Iâm happy to combine both loves in my newest series, the Magical Fortune Cookie books. Â
My friend recommended this book to me since I wanted to learn more about the Indian culture. I enjoyed discovering the different spices tied to each chapter.
In the beginning, there was a beautiful mythological backstory to becoming a Spice Mistress, which I found both inventive and fascinating. I also related to the emotional heart of Tilo, who flaunted the rules of her magic by helping those around her (including an exciting love interest).
A classic work of magical realism, this bestselling novel by Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni tells the story of Tilo, a young woman from another time who has a gift for the mystical art of spices.
Now immortal, and living in the gnarled and arthritic body of an old woman, Tilo has set up shop in Oakland, California, where she administers curatives to her customers.  But when she's surprised by an unexpected romance with a handsome stranger, she must choose between everlasting life and the vicissitudes of modern society.  Spellbinding and hypnotizing, The Mistress of Spices is a tale of joy, sorrow,âŚ
Nancy Drew was the gateway drug for my mystery reading and writing addiction. I love unusual sleuths, and sleuths with secrets such as Mrs. Pollifax, Miss Marple, and Stephanie Plum. Dubbed the âtakeout queenâ by my kids, I love cooking shows and had the good sense to marry a man who enjoys making ice cream.
