Birds are an important connection to nature for me. Like Mr. Flynn, I sometimes wonder if all my adventures are behind me. I remember thinking as a child, like Ollie McPhee, that nothing interesting ever happens. And I know the excitement of catching a glimpse of a bird I have not seen before. Or just hearing a new bird call. The silliness in text and illustrations is not usually my style, but I keep coming back to this book.

It is a fun escape into the natural world that incorporates how to keep a birding journal and information about the Snowy Owl, who is part of the plot. The end pages top off my love of this book with engaging illustrations identifying twenty birds and their habits.  

This simple story offers an intimate view into the life of a hermit crab who has outgrown his shell. He travels along the shore, by the sea in the sand…scritch-scratch, scritch-scratch looking, looking. The lyric repetition I strive for in my own writing helps build tension. The hermit crab needs a place to hide from the prickle pine fish.

I can feel that sandy beach in the illustrations and I have walked there where Hermit Crab encounters a rock, a rusty tin can, driftwood, and an old bucket. None of these make a house for Hermit Crab. I can relate to the satisfaction of a journey’s end. In a new home that is not too heavy or too noisy, not too dark, not too crowded. A safe new home that fits just right. Something we all look for.

When I was a kid, I loved books about miniature things; they piqued my imagination and had me thinking long after the story was finished.

The Victorian Era family of five living inside the snow globe is not only miniature but it has its own weather system—and it hasn’t snowed in a long time! The snow globe rests on the mantle of a “big house” with a mirrored human-sized family.

No one in the family remembers the snow globe except for Baby, who is left at home with Mama while everyone goes outside in the blizzard to play. Baby tips over the snow globe, giving the tiny family exactly what it has been waiting for; a blizzard! Now both families get to play in the snow and it’s ever so much fun! Wonderful for children of all ages.

Growing up in a snowy winter playground, my kids lost a lot of mittens and The Mitten, by Jan Brett, illustrated in her detailed Scandinavian style, sparked their imaginations as to what fate may have befallen them.

Nikki, unwittingly drops his white mitten, lovingly knitted by his grandmother into the snow. It is soon discovered by a mole. Then, one beautifully illustrated forest animal after another, increasingly larger, cozy into the ever-expanding mitten; including a huge bear and, finally, a little mouse, with whiskers that tickle the bear’s nose!

The decorative borders surrounding the main dialogue hint at the story to come, allowing kids to guess what’s next. This gem of a board book provides so much visual detail to be discovered by curious little readers, that it will become a winter staple, never the same twice.

This gem of a board book creates a quiet sense of joy as an adorable little Korean girl dons her white snowsuit and red scarf and sets out with her puppy to explore the newly soft and snowy landscape.

“Pat, pat, pat,” and “Roll, roll, roll,” she goes with her growing snowball past brown bears, forest animals, and polar bears, to a frozen lake where other children play, skate, and make snowmen, and, finally, into to a glorious fantasy scene that will have your kid in wonder!

The fresh, loose, mixed media illustrations created in shades of black and white, with a touch of red, evoke the quiet wonder of a snowy night. The illustrations are masterfully simple and focused, yet beautifully detailed backgrounds set the stage for this wondrous adventure.

After reading this captivating story, I was overwhelmed with the desire to embark on a grand adventure, flying in an open-air cockpit.

Coming from Ohio, not far from where the Wright Brothers took to the skies, flight has always fascinated me, from observing birds to marveling at airplanes. The vivid pictures within the pages of this book ignited a fire within me, giving me wings to soar through the air.

In the spirit of the children's song "Ten Little Monkeys," this book has ten very cute dachshunds who, one by one, go on, then off a great big armchair.  

One little dachshund wants a friend to join him. Two little dachshunds have room for a third. Three little dachshunds want a bone to chew. Four want a ball for a game of catch. Five want a sock to tug. And so on till there are ten little dachshunds on the chair. 

Tired out, they fall asleep, then wake up and jump off one by one, leaving the first dachshund behind. When his nap is finished, he sits up and says, "Hey, you little hot dogs, wake up and play!"  

It's happy, silly dachshund fun with lots of lively barking, yipping, yapping, drooling, snoring, and more. 

Pretzel, the world's longest dachshund, is smitten with a little dachshund named Greta and wants to marry her. 

He tries to win her favor with gifts and a demonstration of his impressive pretzel pose, but she repeatedly rejects his advances. "I don't care for long dogs," she proclaims.  

Then, one day, Greta falls into a deep hole and, thanks to being so long, Pretzel's able to rescue her. He proposes on the spot and she accepts.

I leave it to you to decide how you feel about the premise of this classic story. The good news is the marriage lasts and leads to Pretzel and the Puppies. 

In this sequel, each spread is a self-contained cartoon strip featuring Pretzel as the well-meaning dad who gets into one jam after another. It's light-hearted, affectionate, and action-packed.

This book immediately conquered my heart with its unique illustration style. The artwork is so captivating that you can get lost in it with your young reader, discovering new exciting details every time you look.

This charming tale of a dog's day out in the city is something both children and adults can relate to. I love how it teaches empathy for the dog's feelings without ever explicitly saying it, letting the pictures truly tell the story.

The book takes us on a delightful journey through New York City and to the beach, beautifully capturing the lives of a dog and his human in the bustling city.

To me, this book has a great combination of sleepy and silly elements. The illustrations are warm and cozy, and throughout the book, Bear snores happily in the background.

My kids and I love that while Bear sleeps, a party starts forming in his cave. We love seeing the party grow until Bear wakes up to discover what’s going on.
