This book is not for the faint of heart, there are trigger warnings a mile long and it is one of the most gruesome books I have ever read and yet like a car crash, I couldn’t peel my eyes away from the book.

I listened to it on audiobook and the narration of the story added to the thrill and terror of it all. 

Method 15/13 is a book about a pregnant teen who is kidnapped by a gang who wants her child so they can sell it on the black market.

However, what they don’t know is that she’s an autistic prodigy with sociopathic tendencies who’s planning her escape and revenge from day 1.

This is Home Alone on steroids, and the young woman’s precise planning is so positively chilling that I almost felt sorry for the bad guys. Almost.

Eyes Without a Face is a serial killer book with a unique perspective, the story of a female serial killer told by herself.

She chronicles her murderous journey from college through three decades of her life, and in the process, she made me understand the fascination and the rush she gets from killing.

She justifies her actions by explaining why the victims deserved to die, and I found myself agreeing with her logic in most cases.

Perhaps this one should be read with the lights on because you’ll discover some uncomfortable truths about yourself.

Who can match the character development and killer pacing of Tess Gerritsen’s Rizzoli & Isles books? Her characters are best friends who understand and accept each other’s flaws completely. I love the menacing characters who stalk the BFF duo and the baggage the two have to overcome to keep up with the fight.

Her pacing is stellar, and her dialogue is perfect. I adore her treatment of stalkers—very creepy. While these characters do not have to travel through the jungle, forest, or cave—the city streets, elements, crime scenes, and killers are worthy foes.

Known for his Lincoln Lawyer and Harry Bosch crime/mystery series, this novel is the first one about Connelly’s investigative reporter Jack McAvoy.

I really enjoyed the immersion of the protagonist into the journalism newsroom world as he tries to link his brother’s unexpected murder to a series of nationwide murders.

With all odds against him, I liked the way Jack kept fighting the upstream battle to arrive at an astonishing conclusion to the case.

I had the opportunity to listen to Karin Slaughter speak at the Bouchercon Conference in St. Pete, Florida and this was her new release.

The book sounded wonderful, and my signed copy is on my keeper shelf. Pieces of Her has a crazy, explosive opening and breakneck pace with questions that pile on questions, and we hold on for dear life. I was so enthralled by this story that I bought a second copy for a friend and put it in her hands saying, “You have to read this.” She loved it and so did Netflix because it is now a series.

I admit that I unabashedly love Robert Crais’ serial work, but this stand-alone resonated with me from the moment I read it.

This author showcases her mastery of the police procedural in a standalone set against the gritty backdrop of 1974 Atlanta. The story follows rookie cop Kate Murphy as she steps into the testosterone-fueled world of the Atlanta police force.

From day one, Kate faces a barrage of challenges, navigating an environment that’s as welcoming to women as a porcupine in a balloon factory. As the department dives into the investigation of a fellow officer’s murder, Kate and her partner, Maggie Lawson, suspect they’re being sidelined from the real action. Slaughter expertly weaves a tale of tension and intrigue, highlighting the systemic hurdles and the relentless pursuit of justice in a male-dominated world.

Any book with this author’s Detectives Bosch and/or Ballard is a tour de force in police procedurals. He can make reading a murder file or a newspaper article informative, stimulating, and evocative. In this story, Ballard and the LAPD’s Open-Unsolved Unit are thrust into the spotlight with a breakthrough DNA match linking a recent arrestee to a notorious serial rapist and murderer who vanished two decades ago. The twist? The suspect is only twenty-four, pointing to a familial connection: his father, the infamous Pillowcase Rapist, who terrorized Los Angeles for five years.

As Ballard and her team close in, they unravel a complex web of secrets and legal challenges that test their procedural prowess. The narrative is complex, satisfying, and brimming with skillful twists that showcase the author’s expertise in crafting compelling procedurals.

When Myron Bolitar—part-time detective, former basketball hotshot, and ex-sports agent—discovers that his old frenemy and on-court nemesis Greg Downing, long thought to be pushing up daisies, is actually alive and dribbling, he stumbles into a slam-dunk of a mystery.

This case has it all: a dangerous plot, an ex-girlfriend, a surprise son, his aging parents, and, oh yeah, a serial killer lurking in the shadows. Coben’s narration is as breezy as a summer day, and the witty banter between Bolitar and his best buddy Win is a genuine (though oddly sinister) laugh riot.

At its core, this tale is as much about family ties, love, and loyalty as it is about dodging danger and solving crimes. With a cast of characters that could fill a basketball roster, you might feel like you need a scorecard to keep track—but trust me, it’s worth the read.
