Why read it?

8 authors picked Wizard's First Rule as one of their favorite books. Why do they recommend it?

I love how Richard Cypher, an ordinary woods guide who discovers his profound destiny as a Seeker of Truth, has an extraordinary knack for getting out of one impossible dilemma after another.

I also enjoy how Richard’s chemistry with a beautiful woman known as the Mother Confessor intertwines with his destiny. This writer helped me improve my own writing skills, unlocking my use of more natural language and a deep appreciation for the pursuit of true love. Terry also has a way of building upon one cliffhanger and revelation after another, achieving an epic climax at the end.

While…

I did not fall in love with Wizard’s First Rule right away, but maybe somewhere during the first few chapters, I knew I had a winner.

The series, The Sword of Truth, continues on for some ten books, but the fuse is lit during the first book when I was introduced to the first wizard, Richard, and his trials to become one of the most important producers of magic this magical world had ever seen. The characters in Goodkind’s novels are not perfect, far from it. Flawed though they may be, they are nevertheless engaging and relatable.

This is a tremendous fantasy series and Terry really manages to write scenes that generate imagery and emotion. I like fantasy series in general, but Terry writes characters that feel real and describes scenes that absolutely engage.

When you open up one of his books you better have a good reason to quit because the world he drags you into is incredibly engaging and the characters are smart as well as brave. Calling his series a wonderful getaway barely does it justice.

Book cover of The Devils' Crucible

The Devils' Crucible by Jacqueline Fellows,

"Broken, shattered, empty husks driven by a whirlwind. The clans shall be riven from their heart and cast into the furnace. And this before the snows return."

Three hundred years ago, the human race would have died out if not for a few who created and swore to abide by…

I developed a passion for epic fantasy series when I was introduced to Terry Goodkind’s book.

I passionately followed the story of Richard Cypher and Kahlan the Confessor. I followed their story, book after book. The things that the old wizards knew about people are still true today. It was their first rule and why they created Seekers and Confessors. All I need to do is look at the news, check social media, etc., to see how the rule still stands.

People are stupid; given proper motivation, almost anyone will believe almost anything. Because people are stupid, they will believe…

Richard and Kahlan—a match made in fantasy and perfected in adversity.

If there is one book where the romance kept me reading as much as the world-building, it was each book in The Sword of Truth Series and the Richard and Kahlan novels that followed the series.

Wizard’s First Rule pairs the characters after unexpected circumstances. Danger and adventure face them as they venture through a fantasy world that is jaw-dropping in its breadth. As their journey progresses, the challenges they face become more daunting, and with them, the romance blossoms until we can’t imagine Richard without Kahlan by his…

I love fantasy—especially medieval fantasy, with kings and queens; witches and wizards; and magical creatures, but I wasn’t always a fan of reading. Then, I stumbled upon Wizard’s First Rule in a book club flyer. It was discounted, so I said, “why not?”

It changed my life!

Terry Goodkind drew me into the world and lives of Richard and Kahlan. Their journey into the realm of magic was mesmerizing. I felt the pains, experienced the troubles, and fell in love, as they fell in love. I couldn’t put it down.

Goodkind and his first book into an epic saga, are…

Book cover of Bloodlines

Bloodlines by Rafael Canoa,

Are you free to walk your own path, or are your choices nothing more than a clever illusion?

Three strangers—Flynn, Vurax, and Ellianna—embark on separate journeys of self-discovery as they search for answers to that very question through their unique experiences. When they uncover a shocking secret that shatters not…

I found the foundation of the magic to be interesting, where magic existed as additive or subtractive in various degrees and combinations. Most wizardly magic was either or, while some like Confessors and Mord Sith incorporated a combination of both. In addition the author introduces the first of a set of rules about how to use magic which plays an integral part in the story. I also liked the ethical and moral tension inherent in the story, though I will warn anyone I recommend this book to that it is very graphic and like the magic the ethics and morals…

I recommend this book because of the incredible journey the main protagonist takes across the vast series (11 books in the main story). This is an underdog and hero’s journey epic fantasy book. The magic system, characters, and setting are all fantastic and unforgettable. I absolutely loved the main character and his two closest allies (one is his grandfather; the other is his love interest who is powerful and intelligent, not a damsel in distress). Again, the characters are humanthey make mistakes, sometimes catastrophic, but they learn and grow and are better because of it. I can’t recommend…
