Why read it?

3 authors picked There Might Be Lobsters as one of their favorite books. Why do they recommend it?

I love this book’s unique approach to sharing a story about fear – it lists all the wild ruminations that can run through our minds. In this case, it’s a dog Sukie who is not enjoying a trip to the beach because, among other worries, there might be lobsters! Sukie’s list of fears grows and grows as the story goes on, and she is paralyzed in the sand – until her precious toy Chunka Munka is swept into the water. Sukie lets love overpower her fear and jumps into the water without a worry to save her precious friend. It’s…

From Lisa's list on facing your fears.

There Might Be Lobsters is a great book to help kids face their fears. They can learn from Sukie, a small dog who is afraid of many, many, many things. When Sukie overcomes her anxieties to save her beloved stuffed animal friend, the book shows kids how love can save the day.

From Elizabeth's list on for dog lovers.

Eleanor takes her dog, Sukie, (along with Sukie's stuffed friend, Chunka Munka) to the beach. But Sukie is such a little dog and the ocean is so big! Besides, there might be lobsters! As Sukie's fears and anxieties mount, it's fun to use your own version of a puppy voice to read the dog's thoughts aloud. It's a great empathy piece and talking about Sukie's fears with your little ones may open conversations about what makes them anxious. Crimi offers up a just-right sweet ending that makes me want to read it all over again.
