Rome. AD 70. Private eye Marcus Didius Falco knows his way round the eternal city. He can handle the muggers, the police and most of the girls. But one fresh 16 year old, Sosia Camillina, finds him a case no Roman should be getting his nose into . . .…

Why read it?

7 authors picked The Silver Pigs as one of their favorite books. Why do they recommend it?

If you fall for this book, as I did, then there are twenty more Falco books when you can’t make this one last any longer.

The books work on so many levels. They are brilliantly imagined, well-researched historical novels set in Ancient Rome. They are also send-ups of classic "gum-shoe" novels, since Falco is an "informer," the Roman equivalent of a private detective.

They are who-dunnits, plus a love story—the love of Falco’s life is a posh senator’s daughter, way out of his league. They are exciting adventures, with lots of action, and also very funny. There isn’t a measurement…

From Susan's list on time and change.

I've loved history since the day my primary school headmaster walked into our class and told us he'd be taking our history lessons, starting with the Stone Age. What? There was a time when people didn't have shops and had to make their tools out of stone? -- It was that which captivated me: the differences between then and now. I couldn't have cared less about the date or what king was pretending to be God's gift. I wanted to know how people cooked, how they made their clothes, how they celebrated their birthdays.
So I love books which immerse…

I know these books have been out there for years and years, but somehow they have passed me by till now! I was swept into the world of Marcus Didius Falco and the story never lessened in pace. Wonderful writing, like a 1940s gumshoe detective but in ancient Rome! Brilliant. So pleased I have many more of Lindsey Davis' novels ahead of me!

Book cover of Death and a Crocodile

Death and a Crocodile by Lisa E. Betz,

In ancient Rome, sensible women don’t investigate murders, but Livia Aemilia’s father is dead, and her innocent brother has been accused of the crime. What’s a girl to do? Find the criminal herself, obviously.

Livia and her spunky maidservant pound the ancient Roman pavements in search of the killer, with…

I love historical detective novels, and this one, set in AD 70, is a great way to immerse yourself in the Roman world. Lindsey Davis does her research, creating a real, lived-in space that makes the ancient past feel alive and present.

Another big plus is that it’s hilariously entertaining: I’m regularly guffawing out loud while reading it. Best of all? It’s the first book in a fantastic series, and I’ve enjoyed following private instigator Marcus Didius Falco, and then later his daughter, Flavia Alba, over a number of adventures across the city of Rome and the wider Empire.

From Hannah's list on ancient Rome and its empire.

I have always loved historical fiction, but Marcus Didius Falco was the first character I met who really brought Ancient Rome alive for me. He might be living 2000 years in the past, but his voice is incredibly modern; he’s both relatable and funny!

I loved the idea of a wisecracking private eye in Ancient Rome, and I still do. It’s why I ended up writing one myself. And the descriptions, not just of Falco and his friends and family, but of the city of Rome itself (and much of the rest of the empire, in later books), are just…

From Jennifer's list on bringing Ancient Rome alive.

What happens when you take a tough, ex-legionary who solves crimes for a living, and give him a large extended family of nosy sisters, eccentric uncles, and a mother who shall be obeyed? You get the wickedly funny noir send-up featuring Marcus Didius Falco. In addition to being cracking good mysteries, every book in this series brings fascinating details of ancient Rome to vivid life through Ms. Davis’s snarky and memorable descriptions.

In this first book, Falco finds himself working undercover in a sliver mine in Britannia, a brave but ill-advised scheme that almost ends in his death. In the…

Book cover of Poetic Justice

Poetic Justice by Fiona Forsyth,

In the first century, Rome’s celebrated love poet Ovid finds himself in exile, courtesy of an irate Emperor, in the far-flung town of Tomis. Appalled at being banished to a barbarous region at the very edge of the Empire, Ovid soon discovers that he has a far more urgent -…

Rome 70 A.D. The author has managed to create a very likable and very unlucky main character that brings a lot of laughter. The descriptions of ancient Rome are amazing, there is adventure and mystery and it is overall one of the books I go back to when I want to have fun and go back in time. An absolute worthy read!
